Belgian/Iraqi band Use Knife releases ‘Sowieso F***ed’, ‘F***ed على أي حال’ or ‘F***ed anyway’. A cynical "c'est-la-vie" anthem, set to a heavy 95 BPM beat and a disarray of fucked up samples & sounds, about ten little wanderers who wander kilometers from home trying to belong. 

But home is where the heart is. And the House will never share its wealth.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem in my Heart) did the mix once more and Youniss Ahamad deconstructed his live-visuals into distorted video loops to accompany this sing-along.

‘Sowieso F***ed’ is a digital-only release, but comes with a T-shirt for you to wear, depicting a great design by graphic designer Farah Fayyad, so you can spread the message even further. You can pre-order the t-shirt until Nov 5.

‘État Coupable’ is the 2nd single of Use Knife’s upcoming album ‘État Coupable’ (March 28) and features Jerusalem in My Heart’s Radwan Ghazi Moumneh on buzuq and synths. It’s the only track that has Stef Heeren singing in English, addressing those that need to be addressed in the Western World's lingua Franca. "All eyes on us," he repeats. "Dogma upon dogma, how on earth did we get to this point?" These words cut through the mix like post-punk chants, echoing over acidic, technoid squelches and distorted 4/4 thump before the track dissolves into a pensive ambient soundscape provided by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, who also mixed the record. It's a pivotal moment on the album that contextualizes the meaning of the title itself: is it the nation state that's culpable, or are we all trapped by the guilty state of mind?

‘Freedom, Asshole’ is the first single from the upcoming album ‘État Coupable’ (March 28). It’s a gut-wrenching piece of raw electronica featuring live drums by Spooky-J from Nihiloxica. It’s the only track on the album not to focus on Saif Al-Qaissy's percussion. Pushed by Stef Heeren and Kwinten Mordijck’s distorted synth beat, tape drones and extreme vocal fx, Al-Qaissy uses the opportunity to deploy his most barbed vocal performance of the album. Improvising from a lyric he wrote, he grapples with the privileged Western mindset directly, offering a distorted truth: no one is free until we are all free.

Belgian multidisciplinary artist Youniss Ahamad, a longtime collaborator of the project and creator of the band’s live visuals, has shared a video that embodies unease through distorted images, a black-and-white palette, and abstract bird loops.

BELGIAN-IRAQI BAND USE KNIFE PRESENT NEW ALBUM ‘ÉTAT COUPABLE’
A politically charged record questioning the status quo, État Coupable merges stories of war-torn Iraq with disruptive synth sequences and heavy Arabic percussion

Belgian-Iraqi band Use Knife have announced their new album ‘État Coupable’. Set for release on March 28 via VIERNULVIER Records, the record revolves around the raw synergy between Iraqi vocalist and percussionist Saif Al-Qaissy, who fled war-torn Iraq, and the analogue synths & instrumental bursts of Belgian musicians Kwinten Mordijck and Stef Heeren.

Following their acclaimed debut album The Shedding of Skin (2022), the formation has deepened their relationship through numerous live jams, intense touring and story sharing, pushing both their skills and the boundaries of the project. For its successor, État Coupable, this growth has been enriched by various collaborations, including one with Lebanese-Canadian producer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Jerusalem in My Heart).

Use Knife shifts into a more sardonic mode on 'Iraqi Drum Set', the 3rd single of their upcoming album 'État Coupable' (March 28), sampling conversations they had about Iraqi instruments and their pronunciation - for example the raq (or riq?) - and chiseling a daf rhythm into a powdery industrial stomp.

This is the 29th episode of our radioshow ‘Feeding the Gentry’ on @radioalhara

This is a mix we made for @radiofantasia in April ‘24, highlighting the hypocrisy of Western leaders and their one-sided definition of ‘peace’. This was the theme of our remix-ep Peace Carnival, that was released by @morphinerecords in April ‘24.

Since then the ‘Peace Carnival’ only got worse. People’s lives and homes can’t be treated like business deals!

There’s no peace without justice!

'Feeding the Gentry' w/ Monstera Occulta on Radio alHara Ep 34

Use Knife is the exciting result of the raw synergy between Iraqi vocalist and percussionist Saif Al-Qaissy—who fled war-torn Iraq—and Belgian musicians Kwinten Mordijck and Stef Heeren, known for their passion for analog synths and organic wind instrumentation. 

The band tell a necessary tale of freedom, responsibility and the gulf between the Eastern and Western mindset. Even the instrumentation itself reflects this constant friction; intuitively muddling distorted industrial textures and jerky EBM pulses with brittle Iraqi rhythms and tonalities, Use Knife devise their own distinct harmony against the dissonant global backdrop. 

Debut album 'The Shedding of Skin' (2022) received critical acclaim by The Quietus, Mixmag and Knack Focus, a.o.. They played at festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Sonic City, Videodroom, Grauzone, Botanique, Worm, Wrong Fest, Roadburn, Suoni Per Il Populo, Wave-Gotik-Treffen and We Are Open a.o.

Additionally, ‘Peace Carnival’ was released on Morphine Records —a 10” remix EP featuring tracks from the debut album reinterpreted by Muqata’a مقاطعة, Zoë Mc Pherson, and Rabih Beaini.

Their new album ‘État Coupable’ (March 2025) is mixed by Jerusalem in My Heart's Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, who also created the contrasting ambient 2nd part of the title track, while New York based engineer Heba Kadry (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nicolás Jaar) handles the mastering. Nihiloxica’s drummer Spooky-J, also laid down a post punk beat on first single ‘Freedom, Asshole’.

Youniss Ahamad crafted Use Knife’s distinct visual language, evoking rawness through direct and distorted imagery, and developed scenography and visuals that truly enhance their live show, creating “an all-embracing vortex that allows those experiencing it to plunge, headfirst, into a hypnotic state that veers between a dreamlike trance and a sensual workout.” (The Quietus)

Their radio show ‘Feeding The Gentry’ airs monthly on Palestinian Radio Alhara.
