The Supplication for Rain by Shaykh ʿUmar al-Yāfī [Palestine]
{1759-1818 AD}

‎يَا مَنْ يُغِيْثُ الْمُسْتَغِيْث إِنْ لَمْ تُغِثْنَا فَمَنْ يُغِيْث
‎وَ مَا لَنَا رَبٌ مُغِيْث سِوَاكَ يِا رَبَّ الْعِبَاد

O’ the one who confers aid to the seekers of Succour
If You [O’ Allah] do not grant us aid, who then will give us divine support 
We have no other lord who can relieve us,
Other than You O Lord of the worshippers

‎فِيْنَا صِغَارٌ رُضَّعُ فِيْنَا شُيُوخٌ رُكَّعُ
‎كَذَا بَهَائِمُ رُتَّعُ وَ أَنْتَ لِلْكُلِّ مُرَاد

Amongst us are the young nursing [infants]
And amongst us are the old and hunchbacked
As are the grazing beasts
For You are [the One] desired by all

‎جَهْدُ الْبَلَا حَلَّ بِنَا ضَاقَ الفَلَا مِنْ كَربِنَا
‎وَ كُلُّ ذَا مِنْ ذَنْبِنَا فَهُوَ الْذِي طَمَسَ الْفُؤَاد

 The pains of tribulations have afflicted us
The [vast] plains have become constricted due to our troubles
And these are all a consequence of our sins
For they are indeed what kills the hearts

‎إِنْ كُنْتَ غَيْثَ الْطَّائِعِينْ فَمَنْ يُغِيْث الْمُذْنِبِيْن
‎رَحْمَتُ خَيْرِ الْرَّاحِمِيْن مُطْلَقَةٌ بِلَا قِيَاد

If you are the Helper of only those who are obedient,
Who will then help those [of us] who are sinful?
The Mercy of the Most-Merciful
Is absolute without any restrictions

‎إِنْ كَانَ لَا يَرْجُو عَطَاك إِلَّا الْمُطِيْعُ إِلٰى هُدَاك
‎بِمَنْ يَلُوذُ مَنْ عَصَاك أَنْتَ لِمَنْ قَدْ ضَلَّ هَاد

If none could hope for Your provision
Other than those who are obedient on Your path,
In whom can those [of us] who disobey You seek refuge?
For, You are the Guide for those who are astray

‎يَا رَبِّ عَامِلْنَا بِمَا أَنْتَ لَهُ أَهْلٌ كَمَا
‎عَوَّدْتَ هَذَا كَرَمَا عَبِيْدَ جُوْدِكَ يَا جَوَّاد

O God, deal with us in the way
Which befits Your [Grace]
In the way which You have provided for Your [other] servants
Who are in need of Your bounty of Most-Generous One

‎يَا رَبِّ قُلْتَ اسْتَغْفِرُوْا رَبَّكُمُ فَيَغْفِرُ
‎يَأْتِي السَحَابُ الْمُمْطِرُ يُرْوِي العِبَادَ وَ الْبِلَاد

My Lord, You have said: “Repent,
and your Lord will forgive”
And the rain-filled clouds of the sky will come
And pour rain over all [Your] servants and lands

‎فَيَا رَحِيْمَ الرُّحَمَا وَ يَا كَرِيْمَ الكُرَمَا
‎أَفِض أَفِض غَيْثَ السَّمَا فِي الأَرْضِ فَهْيَ لَنَا مِهَاد

So O Most-Merciful of all those who are merciful,
And Most-Generous of all those who are generous,
Bring down, bring down the rains from the sky
Onto the earth for it is a resting place for us

‎رَحْمَةُ رَبِّي وَسِعَت لِكُلِّ شَيْئٍ جَمَعَت
‎عَادَاتُهَا مَا انْقَطَعَت وَ لَمْ تَزَلْ بِالإِزْدِيَاد

The mercy of my Lord is ever vast
To everything, it is all-encompassing
Its nature [mercy] has never altered
And it is ever lofty.

‎بِالْمُصْطَفَى جُدْ يَا كَرِيْم فَهْوَ الرَؤُوْفُ بِنَا الرَّحِيْم
‎مَن كَانَ فِي العِلمِ القَدِيْم مِنْهُ الْوُجُوْدُ مُستَفَاد

By [virtue of Your favour] of the Chosen One al-Muṣṭafā ﷺ, be generous with us
For he is the one who is the most kind and compassionate towards us
The one who in [Your] timeless knowledge,
benefited existence.

‎صَلَّى عَلَيْهِ اللّٰهُ مَا غَيْثَ السَّمَاءِ انْسَجَمَا
‎وَ قَدْ هَمَا فَعَمَّمَا كُلَّ الأَبَاطِحِ وَ الوِهَاد

‎ God, send prayers upon him
Whenever the rains of the sky and the earth join
And become dispersed throughout
All the deserts and the valleys. 

‎وَآلِهِ وَ صَحْبِهِ وَرَهْطِهِ وَ حِزْبِهِ
‎فَهُمْ غُيُوْثُ سُحْبِهِ لِلْخَلْقِ فِي نَهْجِ السَّدَاد

And [send prayers] to his family and Companions,
And his group and allies
Indeed they are a rain of his clouds
And to the creation, a path to success

‎فَاغْفِرْ لِلْنَاظِمِ يَا تَوَّاب أَيْضًا وَ النَّاشِرِ يَا وَهَّاب
‎عَبْدٌ وَقِيْعٌ فِي الأَعْتَاب يَرْجُو النَّجَاةَ فِي الْمِعَاد

So forgive the writer (of this poem) O Oft-Forgiving,
Also its distributor O All-Giving One
[Each is] a servant who stands at Your doorstep
Seeking salvation in the Hereafter

The sounds
Of the Harlem night
Drop one by one into stillness.
The last player-piano is closed. 
The last victrola ceases with the
“Jazz Boy Blues.”

The last crying baby sleeps
And the night - becomes
Still _ as a whispering heartbeat.
I toss _
Without rest in the darkness,
Weary as the tired night,
My soul
Empty as the silence,
Empty with a vague,
Aching emptiness,
Desiring
Needing someone,
Something.

I toss without rest
In the darkness
Until the new dawn
Wan and pale,
Descends like a white mist
Into the court-yard.

It is a summer night. So - warm, even hot, perhaps oppressive, people staying up late, and at last there comes quiet, stillness, like a whispering heart beat. Life continues, if only just. But the writer cannot sleep; he tosses restlessly, weary as the tired night itself. His soul is as empty as this silence of the shutdown summer night. It is an emptiness however that contains an ache, which is vague, unclear, but somehow to do with need and desire. He has the ‘Jazz Boy Blues’. 

The shorter second verse repeats a line from the first: ‘I toss without rest in the darkness’. And now this restless tossing - feeling unsettled, uncertain, unfulfilled - leads into the ‘new dawn’. But it is an unpromising dawn: ‘wan and pale’ - suggesting illness, exhaustion, weakness, lacking enthusiasm, energy. The night has not revived his energy. The new dawn ‘descends’ - not ascends - ‘like a white mist’ ‘into the court-yard’. A mist obscures vision and clarity. Nothing seems solid and real. And there is no energy in this dawn to create something new and vibrant. There is the contrast of night and day, of darkness and pale/white, perhaps referencing the racial prejudices of the period. Perhaps also referencing some divide in the writer’s mind/soul/body between the desire for someone to love and their absence. 

Interestingly, significantly perhaps, the poem ends in the ‘court-yard’ - a word that juxtaposes high and low (crown and commoner); and perhaps also ‘courting/love’ with ‘yard’, which in America could mean a garden or money (100 dollars). ‘Garden’ sounds positive, but ‘money’ less so.

The white mist descends into and fills this courtyard. If ‘white’ is intended derogatorily, oppressively, then ‘love’ seems a long way away. There is no redeeming feature in the writer’s mood: he has the Jazz Boy Blues.
