In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars", the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This “Txoria Txori” is an English adaptation of the Basque song “Txoria Txori”, reimagined through the lens of the poet’s own relationship and grief. The original, written first as a poem by Joxean Artze in 1957 and set to music by Mikel Laboa in 1968, is a culturally significant work that embodies themes of freedom, love, and identity. In the poem and song, the speaker grapples with the desire to possess the bird (symbolizing a loved one or even a cultural spirit), but realizes that clipping its wings to keep it from flying away would destroy its true nature, the very quality they cherish. In Basque culture, the song resonates as an anthem of resilience and autonomy.

In this retelling, the poet casts his beloved as a cosmic bird—ethereal, otherworldly, and sublime—whose presence appeared as a miracle against the bleak landscape of his damaged inner world. Her eventual departure, though profoundly painful and unmaking, is presented as a necessary release. one the poet could not ethically obstruct, even as he desperately longed for her to remain.

The metaphor of the bird and its freedom, central to the original song, is preserved, but the sonnet reframes the narrative by introducing the human flaws and traumatic wounds that contributed to the loss in his particular context. The poem culminates in a paradox of possession: the desire to hold on to what one loves leads to its ruin, for to trap what is meant to fly is to destroy its nature, and, in seeking to preserve it, one ensures its permanent loss.
