Here is our version of the 1977 classic sultans of swing. Very different to the “live” version elsewhere here on SoundCloud. This is based on the debut album version by dire straits. 

The weather systems album is being recorded in the very near future. It will be a very emotional and powerful album. 

We are so close to the target on GoFundMe that it would be great to get there soon, and go into the album sessions with good energy. 

“Ocean without a shore” is music of light. Of love. Compassion and peace. And it is very loud, and very heavy. The guitars scream on this record, the piano soothes, the orchestra moves you, and the voices will uplift you. You will not be disappointed.

sultans of swing - 1977 album version - dire straits

Let me tell you a story. 

After inner silence was written, but before one last goodbye was recorded, my Mum died at the age of 49.

She was a great lover of music, a true lover of music. She always thought that my guitar style was closest to Peter Green than any other player. And she absolutely loved this song. 

She used to talk about how the song gave her a sense of freedom, of being in flight over the seas, like the albatross in the title. 

It was for this reason that we played it at her funeral. She was now, at last, in peace, and perhaps even, in flight. 

I am now older than she was when she died. I never thought I would suffer in my life the way she did, but it turned out I may have been wrong about that. 

But with strength of spirit we can slowly with time heal and overcome all challenges. 

So yesterday, with no plan, I recorded albatross for the first ever time as a cover - although me and my brothers in anathema played it a few times live. 

And now I present it to you, and just maybe, from some place that’s both near and far, our mum can hear it. 

It was emotional to record. I hope you enjoy it…

This song is over 20 years in the making. 

Since the time of judgement this song has been a potential cover version for us. And now finally here it is. 

When I went to see U2 in Paris play the Joshua tree album in full in 2017, I was already anticipating this song a whole lot

In fact it became the best song I have ever seen or heard a band play live, ever. And I’ve seen pink Floyd and Radiohead many times. 

This song blew me away. It still does. This little tribute is simply us keeping on a promise we made so many years ago. To do a version. This is deserving of your attention.
