South Africa is a magical place, full of wild landscapes and wonderful people.  This was my fourth time touring in the country, and what a privilege it has been.  Johannesburg and Cape Town offer very distinct experiences as cities, but ToyToy and Killer Robot have both curated similarly authentic underground movements over many years, and their hard work and longevity really shows.  

The energy on both dancefloors was passionate, raw, and deeply connected to the music.  Like the two cities, each party has its own unique vibe, but the common thread was a love for and knowledge of deep, hypnotic, underground dance music and an appreciation for the craft of DJing.  Both parties have a 'no photos' policy.  We need more of this please.  

Huge respect to the folks behind ToyToy and Killer Robot for their dedication to keeping underground culture alive, in the face of so many modern headwinds.  

Here are excerpts from both sets.  Cape Town from the earlier, clubbier portion of the night, and Joburg when I was winding down the garden in the wee hours of the morning after a wild four hour ride with their world-class crowd.

Fresh from helming one of Serbia’s most vital club spaces, Stefan Rončević aka Runy brought his distinctive sonic touch to Praterstrasse Club in Vienna, stepping up in support of none other than French maestro Traumer. A powerful moment for the Serbian DJ, it marked yet another significant chapter in his journey – one that seamlessly blends local dedication with global sensibility.Runy’s mix on the night was a tightly-wound and expertly curated session that reflected his deep-rooted commitment to the underground. Known for his ability to navigate seamlessly between genres, moods and tempos, his set paid subtle homage to the 90s, while folding in nuanced references to ambient, jazz, trance and electro. Stefan Rončević aka RunyHaving been a pivotal force behind Novi Sad’s Club Tunnel, Runy’s approach continues to centre on building community and preserving club culture in its most sincere form. His Vienna appearance wasn’t just a gig – it was a moment of cross-border resonance, a meeting point between two club cultures grounded in deep sound and open-minded dancefloors.Runy’s presence at Praterstrasse also speaks to the growing recognition of his craft outside Serbia. With each booking beyond his home turf, he carries with him the spirit of his local scene – one shaped by resilience, DIY ethos and a refusal to conform to the fast pace of global clubland turnover. It’s this grounding that gives his sets their shape and purpose – and Vienna’s crowd, warm and responsive, absorbed it all with open ears.
