Melodies of MGS: Original Compositions

This piece has a generally relaxed and melodious flow, based on a television programme called ‘Wheel Do It’, where a group of leisure cyclists take to cycling around scenic locations in Singapore like Botanic Gardens and Sentosa. Through irregular and detached rhythm, the piece is made lively and quirky while the melody is repeated several times through the piece.

Wheel Do It - Cassia Chang

The Quest of Dance, tells a story of four people on an expedition. It is inspired by various dances of the Argentinian culture, and the works of Astor Piazzolla. To portray the arduous journey of the explorers, the piece in written in the key of C minor.

Memorabilia describes a memorable moment when a long lost working young adult in the city finally reunites with his family. The change in key in the piece portrays his exuberant mood when his family gives him a surprise visit.

This piece was written with an imagery of ambience. This compositions experiment with pitch and texture, to create various sections of different ambience.

Alter (変更) - Koh Rong Jin

Failures and challenges help us to grow and learn from our mistakes. This piece motivates listeners to be optimistic about the future although the challenges seem to be hard to overcome. This song is also dedicated to people who are facing challenges in life - if we continue to persevere, we will be able to chase our dreams and achieve them one day. Inspired by Chinese pop style, synthesized instruments were used to compose this piece.

A mixture of ambient music and hip hop style drum beats, this new age music in electronic form creates a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation, but with a twist due to the slightly edgy style. The different instruments with their interlocking melodies represent a fusion of the 3 different types of music - Electronic, Asian and Western music. 

Best Way Out - Gwendolyn Seet

An instrumented piece for handbells, Mystique and Mischief revolves around a rhythmic motif.  Various handbell techniques are used, such as shakes, marts, mart lifts and malleting. Being percussion instruments, these techniques create different timbres on the bells.

"Forever" is a poignant and evocative music composition for flute and piano that captures the timeless essence of love, longing, and eternity. The flute's delicate, ethereal melodies intertwine with the rich harmonies of the piano, creating a sense of profound connection and endless possibility. The music flows with a graceful and introspective quality, inviting listeners to embark on a journey through the depths of emotion and memory.

Forever - Amanda Ang

"First Love" depicts the stages throughout two teenagers' experience in their relationship. In this piece, the relationship starts off smoothly, then transitions into one of heartbreak, but a sweet ending is restored as the teens slowly regain happiness.

This waltz is lively and joyful, having three voices in most parts of the composition. The waltz style of the early romantic period is mimicked by maintaining the “oom pah pah” rhythm throughout on top of a legato melody.

Lavender’s Blue was arranged to highlight the unique origins of the classic poem. Originally a 17th-century English folk song, Lavender's Blue was featured in the Cinderella movie. The beauty and innocence of Cinderella’s childhood are portrayed in this piece with an added interlude and sweet orchestration.

This piece is a lo-fi composition with a gentle melody. More instruments are introduced into the piece as it progresses through the three sections. Listen out for instruments like chimes and bass as they emerge in the piece!

The scenario of a day off at the beach, or a night-time drive provides a laidback mood to this piece, with a relaxed groove that makes for a dreamy full chorus.

Inspired by Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, this is the first movement of a string quartet, sounding lively yet serious.

String Quartet In E Major (1st Movement) - Zhang Qingyue

This piece was inspired by Christopher Nolan’s film “Inception” and was written to fit the scenes like a soundtrack. Emotional depth was expressed in the piece to match the great acting in the movie.

Going Home - Zhang Qingyue

The title of the piece, Souvenir, means “memory” in French. A sense of nostalgic yearning is evoked through lyrical melodies, richer harmonies and a larger range of pitch.

This piece illustrates looking back on happy memories with someone even though they are not there with you anymore. There is brightness in the music as well as a tinge of sorrow, illustrating the bittersweet feelings one might have while reminiscing good times.
