The year is 1975 and radio station KMA in Shenandoah, Iowa is celebrating 50 years on-the-air by bringing to the microphone some of the station's all-time favorite entertainers. This is Marion Hilding, better known to the wide clear-channel audience of KMA as "The Swedish Songbird". At the time of this broadcast, Marion was 60. This recording was provided for non-profit use only courtesy of his son, Curt Hilding and KMA 960, Shenandoah, Iowa. Marion Hilding was my Swedish Grandfather's Brother... my Great-Uncle.

So popular with the Baby Boomers. I was 8 years old.

Call in to My Boomer Radio (KOMJ) Omaha, Council Bluffs & Blair, Nebr to Afternoon Drive Show with Jack Swanda. It's a previously discussed Call in request by Gerry Logan (old time 1975 radio buddy of teenage Jack)for music by Miss Peggy Lee, a song that charted at #8 on Billboard Pop in the year 1958... a comeback for Lee after Big Bands of the 40s faded away in the 50s. / Jack and Gerry discuss some of the history of the music and Peggy Lee herself born in North Dakota to a Swedish father and Norwegian mother. Peggy's birth name was Norma Egstrom. "Discovered" 3 times, she migrated from Fargo ND to Minneapolis to Chicago where, in 1942, she began singing with Benny Goodman & His Band. The rest is history... a 30+ year career for Miss Lee.

This 60-spot written by Gerry Logan and performed by Frank Greene & Logan won First Place at the Lincoln Advertising Club's Annual Awards Banquet. We also took Best of Show that year, 1975, for our total KLMS HIT MEN radio self-promotion campaign. The big shots at the Lincoln (NE)Ad Club were so pissed off at our wins, they changed categories for the following year's awards banquet... a change that excluded local radio stations. But, we didn't care.  We knew we were good. Didn't need an award to prove it.

VETERANS DAY 11 -11 -2019 ... Sit In with Boomer Radio's Jack Swanda and 2 War Veteran Guests: CDR Peter Fey USN-ret (New Navy) and PH3 Gerald Logan USN 1964-1970 (Old Navy - but not the clothing store). In his retirement, Fey has written a detailed military history of Carrier Air Wing-16 onboard the USS Oriskany (1965-68)called BLOODY SIXTEEN because of its extraordinary losses of aircraft to AAA & SAM and nearly 1/3rd of their pilots as KIA, MIA & POW. // Logan served with Carrier Air Wing-16 on the Oriskany in 1967-68, and has also written an autobiographical novel based on his diary entitled GOD, BOMBS & VIET NAM. // CDR Fey was a Naval Aviation Career Man, serving 22 years, as pilot, electronic weapons expert and instructor at the Navy's War College, NAS Fallon, NV and Top Gun. CDR Fey saw action during OIF (Iraq) and OEF (Afghanistan).

The year, 1975. Here's a portion of Gerry Logan producing a spot with 5 layers of sound-on-sound (using cart machine and Scully tape recorder) slightly speeding up the tape recorder by wrapping, with masking tape, the pull-through guide post (never knew what it was called)to create David Seville's Chipmunk effect. Pretty simple actually. Just about every production director and deejay knew how to do it.

Raised in America's Heartland, Gerry Logan dropped out of high school in 1964 and dropped into lovely, tropical Vietnam where he served with Fleet Intelligence and Photo Recon thru 1968. He attended Brown Institute of Broadcasting, Minneapolis on the G.I. Bill. Launching his career at WLKE 1170, Waupun, Wisconsin. Gerry served as Deejay, Award-Winning Copywriter/ Production Director and Graphic Designer at 5 midwestern radio stations and 3 advertising agencies. In 2012, he published a war memoir entitled, "God, Bombs & Viet Nam" under pseudonym: Gerald MacLennon.
