In the run up to his slot at Ritual next month, Calibre has kindly served us an excellently crafted podcast.

The mix is an showcase of the emphatic, dark and rolling drum and bass which has won Martin much acclaim and support from the likes of dnb pioneer Fabio, who was the first in the scene to notice the producer's talent and sign him to Creative Source. 

Since then, he has grown into one of the household names of the drum and bass world, as his numerous albums and this year's excellent Fabric mix confirm.

On Saturday 5th October, Calibre is to headline at Ritual, a night held at Fulham venue Under The Bridge. Not known for its bass scene, West London will see some of the finest in current underground music, with a line up featuring DJ EZ as well as newcomers Bodhi and Last Japan as well as Calibre himself.

With 500 capacity and immense soundsystem, Under The Bridge is a step away from raw, unadorned warehouses, instead offering visuals and UV lighting to compliment the massive sound of the DJs.

The festive season is here and I just hit 2 million plays, so it's a double celebration. Now if, like me, you think that nothing says Christmas like a bit of soul-crushingly dark techstep then I'm sure this festive offering won't disappoint. Indeed, this idea is one I've been sat on for a while; my mixing habits have definitely slowed this year but I really wanted to grind a decent one out before 2025. 

The mix rationale then. Caught up somewhere between my 500th listening of Trace & Ed Rush's legendary '97 One In The Jungle set, and the preceding year's Tech Steppin compilation, I found myself asking a simple question. What if the legendary (and it really is fucking legendary) 'No U-Turn Experience' mix had been made a year earlier? Why don't you ponder that for a minute, grab a large Baileys, pop this on and kick back. Merry Christmas.

Yaman Productions Tribute show from 27th June 2025 with special guest DJ Pearsall. Original Hardcore Jungle sounds with DJ Chromz & Vali NME Click. Every other Saturday 6.30 - 8.30 PM / 19:30-21:30 CET on www.jungletrain.net.

Another tribute special: the Yaman Productions studio tape series. These cassettes caused quite the stir back in 92-94 with regular mixes by titans such as Bukem, Randall, Hype, Peshay, Frost, Bailey, Gachet, Mickey Finn and Easygroove. They were extra studio mixed for these series, included no MCs, and held the freshest tunes you might just have heard on your night out of raving. Pre-internet with a thriving dubplate culture it could take weeks, months, or even years until you could hear that illustrious tune again - and some never came out till today!

this is the mix, consisting of Moving Shadow releases only, clocking in at 4 (four) hours and is the first mix of three. all tracks featured (except one) are from releases with catalogue numbers before 100 - roughly at that time there was a major change in drum&bass as a whole - it became more cold, nervous, machine-like and I felt emotionally more connected to the more soulful, atmospheric and jazzy stuff being released earlier than that.

as you might have figured out by now, I was - and still am, in a way - an addict of this fine label which managed to release a hell of an amount of most forefront quality drum&bass and jungle of it's time. I was so obsessed I had to get every single vinyl Moving Shadow release. after 250 or so releases, I still am halfway. for me, it was a label with unsurpassed quality/quantity ratio, with an unique sound, the cream of the crops, the icing on a chocolate cake. few other drum&bass labels have ever gotten close to this, most notably the Good Looking empire, Metalheadz.

if anyone should care, it was recorded using two stanton st-90 turntables, a numark dm3001x mixer and two stanton sk520 cartridges, meaning it's an all vinyl mix and recorded in one go.

as I said before, there are two more 4-hour moving shadow only sessions. my ultimate dream would be to re-record and re-master these mixes using digital copies, to ensure the best sound quality which the pieces of music contained definitely deserve. these mixes were intended to be a journey through the soundscape, the snapshot of mid-90s moving shadow world, therefore, my input is merely a vessel for the music.
