Method: Once again, The Pull of the Past (https://soundcloud.com/thepullofthepast) showed kindness in allowing me to integrate one of his compositions into a poetry soundscape.  This time, it is the hauntingly beautiful Autumn Hearted: https://soundcloud.com/thepullofthepast/autumn-hearted The copyright for this part of the composition remains with him. Please listen at his place - a powerhouse of inobtrusive creativity. 

Narration: This soundscape uses noise, music, voice and a field recording to create dense space and to narrow in on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia . A few days ago, I was recording a brook in the wide open field when two birds of prey started to have an extensive conversation - what could be more menacing to 'a shy little bird' - apart from all the intrusive sounds around it?

stop being present within my body
she yells into her sister's persitant breathing
she so longs to silence the shared dorm room
it's fists, knives, headphones or leaving

the tireless roar of wheels in the streets
makes her shrink with disgust, shudder with horror
there is no room left for her focus to settle
a shy little bird screeching with terror

crowds of people are moving right through her
trampling, coughing, yelling, rushing
her attention disperses, disintegrating
sand on this beach, surrounded by ruins

a hospital clock ticks her awake
time's leaking faucet, relentless
strapped to a frame, exposed, she suffers
cliffside torture, tartarus, helpless

I saw a news report that Ryuichi Sakamoto has raised his voice in favor of reconsidering the redevelopment of the Meiji Jingu Gaien district, despite his health declining to the point where continuing music production is difficult. I can relate to this, as I have experienced times when I had no energy or motivation to make music during illness. Even Ryuichi Sakamoto feels that way, which is very sad.
The meaning of the kanji for music is divided into "on" and "gaku," with "on" meaning sound and "gaku" meaning "enjoyable, pleasant." The phrase "music is written as enjoying sound" is a familiar saying. Music can be both enjoyable and sad, but I believe that the act of creating music is, in a way, a positive experience that allows us to feel alive. Even if it is a sad song, when we create it, we are trying to overcome that sadness and become more positive. Music may indeed be powerless, but the power to create it comes from within, and that is something we must be grateful for today.
