A 2015 voice memo of a blues with the legend George Garzone, from a duo show we played at Mezzrow. Some of the concert is on YouTube in video form, but I don’t think this one is. Starts as “Turnaround,” ends as “Blue Monk.”

I've always used these voice memos as a reality check—to hear things more clearly and to find what needs work. But lately I’ve been realizing they can serve another purpose too: that of time capsule. They remind me of what I once valued, what I was focusing on, and what might be worth reintegrating into my playing now (as well as, often, what might be better left in the past). 

The blues that I’m sharing now has a swagger and looseness that brought a big smile to my face. Felt welcome in these dark times we’re living through. George’s playing here is just absurd. As good as it gets. “You dig?”

Came across this version of “Green Dolphin St” while going through some voice memos from last year. This is from April 2024, with Thomas Morgan on bass and RJ Miller on drums. RJ sounding positively vicious here; he’s one of the most singular (and swinging) drummers in the world, and making music with him brings out some of the best in my own playing.
