Faint Pulse

Really really simple- Moog’s DFAM supplies some kick, a Volca Beats provides a bit more kick and some hats, and the Subharmonicon does the rest. An almost identical version can be found on my YouTube channel- Wal RtB Studios- where you can see the knobs on the SubH being twiddled...

Silurian Seas

Recorded on location, in that the water motif that runs right through this piece is a field recording of a tributary stream to the River Wye, and the remainder was put together using just a Dreadbox Typhon and a handful of iOS apps in the cabin in which we were staying. This is what I did on my holidays people… Oh, and the pic is of the River Wye itself, under Symonds Yat.

Assembled from parts played largely on the Modal Skulpt SE, backed by Sugar Bytes DrumComputer, in honour of my wife’s milestone birthday. She had listened to it by 5am on the day and liked it, so I can now safely share it with both my followers here. More techno-ish than techno, but that’s what the drum presets said, so…

Just a Number

Just because a synth’s preset defaults to 120bpm, there’s no reason to be bound by it. Presets from SynthMaster 2 and DrumComputer are slowed down and embellished by bits and pieces of lo-fi Retro Piano, and then further degraded by means of sundry reverbs and the like. The surprise key change, though brief, works well imho.

Lazy Lo-Fi

Mad title, yeah- but the day I started this I had been directed to Housing Benefit Regulation 2(3B), and it was uppermost in my mind… Anyway, this began with me finding a pattern in DrumComputer, slowing it down, and deciding it sounded dub enough. Once I’d given DC the multi-out treatment, the rest followed…

Nothing more than a Cm7add9 chord built up note by note on the iOS emulation of the Buchla ID700. More a soundscape than a piece of music, but hey! it’s not called Musiccloud, is it?

The Night All The Insects Left, Forever

Recorded in Coverdale when it was steadily raining, though the pic is of the Aysgarth Falls just before it absolutely hammered down. Two instances of Fab Filter’s ‘Timeless’ delay here, subtly on the Dreadbox Typhon’s bass sequence, big on the rather loose EP arpeggio, itself played by Ioniarics. Moral of the story? Always take an iPad and a synth when you go on holiday…

Coverdale Rain

Just one instrument and a drum track. Ok, the instrument in question is Moog’s Subharmonicon, so there are two four-step sequences playing here, and there are a few fx applied, both in AUM during recording and in Cubasis while arranging. Vertigo

A somewhat more ‘textured’ version of the piece recently uploaded to my YouTube channel- called ‘0-Coast riff(er)’ there- comprising several iterations of a sequence played by riffer in iOS on the Make Noise 0-Coast. I’ve only lately learned that this is even possible (the 0-Coast doesn’t do midi over usb, after all) by means of the SQ-1 used, not as a sequencer in its own right, but as a midi-to-cv converter. The added value here is a truly eerie arp from Ice Gear’s Kronecker synth, while the rather Euclidean drum pattern has been shipped over unchanged, because I’m rather proud of it.

Everywhere Yet Nowhere

Rory the Border Studios is located in the heart of rural Suffolk, UK, and produces hand-made guitars under the RtB brand, as well as a growing and diverse collection of (hopefully) original music. I had been uploading this to SC under the name Brownfield, but that was confusing an awful lot of people (three separate names?), so the artiste name is now simply the short form of the studio name, and also aligns with the YouTube channel name- to which I have recently started uploading again- ‘Wal RtB Studios’. 

Please note that any guitar that you hear on any of these tracks was made, on the premises, by me. Not that I’m showing off or anything...
