Kim Rios reveals her work uncovering the nuances of stereotype threat, where individuals experience anxiety about confirming negative stereotypes about their social group. In this interview, Rios, assistant professor of psychology at Ohio University, explains her research into why Christians underperform on scientific tasks when reminded of the negative stereotype about Christians being “bad at science.” She also discusses her work in stereotype threat surrounding multiculturalism and ethnic identity, and unpackes another study where she examined power and submissiveness among leaders who have a high need to belong.

But as science journalist Jo Marchant writes in Cure: A Journey Into the Science of Mind over Body, suggestions that “mindpower” could help us heal or stave off disease have traditionally been viewed (by Western medicine, at least) as “flaky in the extreme.” Mind-body medicine conjures images of therapists harnessing undetectable “energy fields,” and spiritual gurus “laying on hands.” But in our rush to avoid quackery, Marchant asks, have we unfairly sidelined the role of the mind in medicine? Marchant joins Ira to discuss the results of her deep dive into the evidence for—and against—mind-body approaches, from placebo effects to hypnosis and mindfulness.

Marchenkov will travel to St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia this summer to research archival sources that will assist in completing his forthcoming book, Three Borises: Poetic Truth against the Will to Power. The book is a defense of art at philosophy’s ally and focuses on how three artists, Alexander Pushkin, Modest Musorgsky and Andrei Tarkovksy challenged the modern views on art.  Marchenkov is a  professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts in the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University.

Ryan Shorey, assistant professor of psychology at Ohio University, sat down with WOUB radio host Kelee Riesbeck to talk about his current study aimed at learning if intervention programs work better when administered alone or combined with other sexual assault reduction programs.  Shorey gives a general overview of these programs and unpacks terms like rape myth acceptance and bystander/social norms. Shorey’s goal? To help inform programs that reduce these harmful behaviors on college campuses and beyond.
