Diamond Canopy was just days away from entering the studio to record our first full length album when on January 17th, 2019, we lost our brother and our voice, Matt Townsend.  It was extremely hard for each of us, and although we were unsure of our future, we continued to play.  At the time, we never would have thought that we’d have the chance to complete the songs from that album.

Townsend initially approached Matthew Grube (drums) and Will Nufer (guitar) to express an interest in making music.  Even after knowing him for sometime, we were completely unaware of his vocal talent and musical ambitions.  After experimenting with different musicians early on, Diamond Canopy solidified its lineup with Jeffrey Roden (keys) and Aaron Scott Givens (bass), and the band was complete.  Over the next few years, we played many shows and continued to write original songs, always with Matt Townsend and his soulful voice at the helm.  As a band, we were always hardworking, but we also had just as much fun- with Townsend always at the center of it all.  

Matt’s singing was what shined when the band played, but his kind heart, generous spirit, and incredible sense of humor was what really made being part our band so much fun.  Matt never came to practice without a full heart and a full bag of snacks for everyone.  It was his constant smile and his persistent positivity that made him such an inspiration to us and everyone else around him.

Despite the tragedy of losing Matt, we consider ourselves blessed to have been able to record four pre-production demo songs together in 2018.  This left us with isolated recordings of Townsend’s vocals, which- with the help of Andrew Dugan at Zound Factory Studios- allowed us to re-record our instrumental parts for these songs.  In addition to these four songs, we also captured two live recordings, one recorded at Zound Factory, and the other, which features Townsend’s father (bassist Lee Townsend of the Ravyns), recorded at The Peabody Institute in Baltimore, MD.  

It has been an extremely emotional process for us all, but it has also been a spiritual and healing one.  Since Matt’s passing, it’s been an interesting evolution for the band.  Our biggest motivation for continuing to play was to keep Matt’s spirit alive through our songs.  We’re happy with the results of our work, and we hope to continue to honor Matt’s immortal talent and energy by sharing his music with the world.
