The Cimmerian Darkness Sonata is a three-movement sonata that is written to depict my experience with mental health struggles. And more specifically, my struggles with my three mental illnesses: major depressive disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); with each movement representing a different mental illness.
	The name of the overall piece is based on the Cimmerian people from Homer’s, The Odyssey; specifically book 11, “The Kingdom of the Dead”. The Odyssey describes the Cimmerian as a place of perpetual darkness, clouded in mist and clouds, never being able to see any sunshine. 
	Each movement is inspired by a different classical piece written for solo piano, and I will state where my inspiration came from.
	Movement one, Wretched Ruminations, is based on major depressive disorder, with inspiration from movement one of Beehtoven’s Moonlight Sonata. This movement is written to not be a very technical piece per se, but to be very demanding in terms of the emotion that needs to be in this piece.
	Movement two, Blemished Marrow, is based on social anxiety, with inspiration from Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy. This piece is written as a theme and variations to represent how social anxiety (at least mine) masks itself as your “healthy” brain trying to help you, but it’s always just your anxiety.
	And Movement three, Mangled Recollections, is based on my PTSD, with inspiration from Scherzo No. 2 in C minor by Clara Schumann. My PTSD was very aggressive and always present. And that is represented by the constant and aggressive nature of my PTSD.
	This piece is meant to highlight my experience with mental illness; so this piece may not encapsulate everyone else’s experiences. I hope you enjoy this piece!

The Cimmerian Darkness Sonata - Movement Three - Mangled Recollections

“Ο Μπλε Οκεανός”, translates from Greek into “The Blue Ocean”. This piece tells the story of a diver exploring the ocean and going on a journey. This piece aims to capture two core ideas: 1) The beauty, warmth, and life that the ocean has. And 2) The darkness, mystery, and terror that is also associated with it. The story begins with the diver facing the surface of the ocean. Then dives in and begins exploring. As they explore, the ocean becomes more and more alive. Soon encountering fishes and other oceanic life. As they continue exploring, they eventually swim so far down that they cannot see anything. They only feel otherworldly creatures moving the water, encircling them. One gets too close to the diver, and they start the swim back up to the surface, trying to escape the horrors that lurk below. They finally get back closer and closer to the surface. They remember the beauty they saw earlier and breach the surface. And all they hear is the ocean again. Slowly moving back and forth. However, Robby’s battery is getting older, and Lute needs to find a new battery for him. As they adventure, the soon discover the desolated world that has connections to Robby.

Wisp (Short Film OST)

The origins of Soft Winter Rain come from three separate events coinciding at the same time. The biggest thing was I reached out to my old piano teacher and gave him some life updates; as I had just finished my first year in college. He told me that at the end of May 2026, he would be shutting down his studio. And he would be having one last recital, and he invited me to come back to perform. At the same time, I recently got my first microphone and audiobox. With the gears turning in my brain, I just needed a springboard to get going, which I found two months later. I went to Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I was walking around their Japanese garden, I saw a plaque affixed to a rock, the plaque said, "Soft Winter Rain." I saw that and said, "That's my piano piece."

Soft Winter Rain paints the picture of being in a snowy forest, and all you can see are trees. And you're just meandering through the forest, watching the rain slowly fall in the moonlight. You're seeing the moonlight glisten the snow, it's quiet and peaceful, admiring the beautiful scenery. With the use of heavy reverb and delay, enhancing the piano sound, Soft Winter Rain creates a beautiful and peaceful soundscape. Just close your eyes, and relax to the calming scenery.

Soft Winter Rain

“Sitting on the opening sequence up until the piano solo, I was never sure where I wanted this piece to go exactly. I was very content with how the opening sounded, but I was never satisfied with anything I wrote beyond that. I was stuck on what to do, going away for a month, and coming back to it, and scrapping everything I worked on, then went away again. I kept repeating this cycle until February, I was hit with an idea; I could dedicate this piece to the love of my life. I quickly went back and struck with new-found inspiration; I quickly wrote the solo trumpet melody and planned out my idea for the piece.

The Sun Rises tells the tale of, well, the sun rising. I wrote the piece with the idea of slowly building energy throughout the piece, until the piece can't build any longer, and it explodes in the full force of the band. The piece captures just sitting on a deck, looking over the lake, and slowly seeing the sun rise; as it slowly brightens and warms everything around it. And by the time it fully rises, the surrounding nature just explodes with color and life."
