And The Stars Fell

(Originally written in Reason).  You find yourself sitting at table in the great hall of Lanrick Castle, the home of the great highland Chief of the Clan Gregor.  Meats and sweets are passing and the kinsmen of the clan make merry as the fiddler and piper entertain the gathering.  Suddenly, bursting into the hall is the Chief's war leader, his 'Wolf' returned with a war band from a raid against a rival clan.  The Chief's Wolf regales the hall with stories of daring and plunder much to the laughter and celebration of the clan ....
     ... and the mist close in, the vision fades and you find yourself listening to the haunting sound of music long past, laughter long gone as you stand in the ruined remains of an old scottish castle.

MacGregor's Wolf

So ... since I had to do an arrangement for class of a song I knew, why not have fun.  All respect to Matt and Beth Redman for a great faithfilled song.  So ... Blessed Be Your Name re-arranged as a swing tune with a horn section.  This is a rough cut, and horns are in octaves and unisons.

This is a song that came from a lot of emotion this last week.  With the sudden death of my dog of 11 years, Pugsly ... 
I had several melodic statements bouncing in my head recently, and they coalesced into this.  It includes a motive used in "And the Stars Fell", but a lot of new material.  The main melodic theme is stated in an English Horn solo at both the beginning and the final statement.  The solo is supported in strings and at the end, a single French Horn playing the final counter melody.
I'm not overly happy with the sequencing ... I will probably continue to fight with the French Horns ... they feel overly muted to me.

Tragedy of Darkness

David Crowder created a very beautiful song with "O Praise Him".  And it has just the right syncopation to flow in a Bossa Nova rhythm section.  The melody is performed in octaves and 3 part soli with a five piece horn section.  This recording was done using only samples.

Was playing around today with some audio tracks from a styles class, some ideas (done in MIDI) and a bass track I laid down on SusieQ (strong compression in the mix) ... Might keep working with this and see where it goes.
