Satellite is the 4th album from Graham Richardson's Last Days. Richardson who is now well known for his cinematic electro-acoustic pieces that effortlessly invoke an almost inconceivably tangible imagery has this time around turned ever inward for Satellite's core inspiration. While Richardson credits the album with certain personal themes in tow he's more apt to let the listener gather their own meaning of the album's affinity of satellite and stars. The song New Transmission features vocals by Beth Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) and could very well sum up the album's apex while delivering the most pop affected Last Days song to date. Australian Music Prize-nominated composer Luke Howard has been described as “absolutely heavenly” (Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 6) and his music as “an ambient masterclass” (Musos’ Guide), but no words can fully capture the potency of Howard’s enthralling compositions. A pianist since childhood, Howard has scored films and performed with artists as diverse as Lior and Jeff Mills, capturing audiences with contemporary classical arrangements that curl and twist around the boundaries of a particular emotion. Though wordless, Howard’s songs perform a function unique to music as a medium – that of evoking without describing, bringing listeners to a feeling which defies articulating. 

Now signed to UK label Mercury KX (Lambert, Olafur Arnalds, Solomon Grey) and joined live by drummer and collaborator Daniel Farrugia, 2017 has Howard working across several projects: arranging the keyboard works of photographer William Eggleston, a pioneer of colour photography; a European tour beginning in the UK and ending with a performance at Germany’s legendary Elbphilharmonie; and a new record. 

Howard is one of Australia’s foremost practitioners of contemporary classical music. Having already accomplished so much and with more on the horizon, he is set to captivate audiences worldwide.

While working on my new album, I began to try to write a track which encapsulated in its sound the feeling of something new and being full of hope with #pianoday approaching. Around the same time I discovered this beautiful old word in a twitter feed from Susie Dent, and it was perfect for the emotion in this track being created. 'Respair' means fresh hope and a recovery from despair.  The Piano is very much celebrated in this piece by it's background role as a continuous, percussive-like sound, providing a platform for the other instruments to dance upon. I also wanted to use the Piano to somehow gently lead the piece through its chord changes, establishing the mood, as an ode to the way I like to work with piano in my music.

Gavin Greenaway is a British Emmy ® award-winning pianist, composer and conductor with an extensive catalogue of achievements: conducting over 100 feature film and television soundtracks, composing for major entertainment and cultural events, and producing and songwriting with chart-topping artists.

Incorporating styles from classical to minimalism alongside more filmic influences, Greenaway’s first solo release ‘Il Falco Bianco’ was widely acclaimed and saw him make his debut in the classical charts as a composer and pianist.

Greenaway’s second album ‘woven’  was released in February 2019 entered the UK classical artist album charts at number 20. This album used a different approach to piano composition using layered recordings of an upright piano, which Greenaway ‘prepared’ with various fabrics and materials. All of the sounds on the album, from delicate sustains to unusual percussive timbres, are derived directly from the piano.
