Nacked Love

For this song I used a brief recording from 13 years ago, when I was trying to play the keyboard. I added the vocals and a fairly atmospheric guitar. In some way, it means a change of style compared to my previous songs. Of course, I'm still me, with my limitations.

Thanks to David, the friend responsible for Hand on the Rock, I realized that the possibilities for making songs are as many as one's interests. Believe it or not, I wasn't aware of that. At least, I didn't see myself capable of doing it. Effortlessly, which is how I like to do everything, this song came to me, and here it is. I hope you like it. In this case, it's Spanish actor José Bódalo, a true legend of the theater, film, and television world. Little known internationally, he was, however, a true giant in his profession. He died in 1985.

In my world

A song that could be considered an ode to the simple brutality of man, so simple, so tender at the same time. That model we find in monsters like King Kong, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or Frankenstein's monster. Ferocious monsters with tender hearts. It's simple. The song. And man is dying out.

I don't know what the rush was to make this song. Especially considering it's just another one of those songs that sound like Sweet Home, Alabama... Anyway, I recorded it and here it is. I hope someone likes it, or at least that it doesn't offend anyone.

Okay, here I go again. So, what's all this about? If I think about it carefully, it's nothing more than making songs. Simple pop songs. Catchy, simple pop songs. Simple, catchy pop songs to sing along to. A bit like the sixties, a bit before psychedelia. Like late 1965. And, well... that's it, if that's what you think.

Another ode to depression and self-pity. This time, let's admit it, with a certain amount of energy. I hope that, despite being born from such a disastrous seed, it transmits some vigor to the listener.
An Epiphone guitar was used (more or less decently) for the rhythm section and lead guitar, an Ibanez bass for the bass (naturally), and the drums were split between a pre-recorded track and a digital MIDI (played with one finger). Two vocal tracks were used. Both, unfortunately, by me.

A very simple song, as one would expect. Minimalist, almost, it contains a simple idea and several complex statements. The idea is that the past is useless and that we need someone now. Musically, it's a miniature with several smaller miniatures inside, and a brash, sparse vocal style.

None of my songs follow any plan. In fact, none of my songs are planned in advance. Why did this one turn out so long and with such a distinctly progressive rock feel? I have no explanation. What are the lyrics about? More or less, they're pieces of advice from one friend to another (which is also me, of course). This is truly embarrassing. This is the third time I've announced my last song of the year. I should be able to bet that this time it's for real. But, of course, there are still 24 hours to go... Anyway, this afternoon, in a silly moment, this idea came to me... and, without further ado, I recorded it. I reckon I was 12 when I first heard The Beatles' song "I'm a Loser," which pretty much reflected Lennon's masochistic tendency toward self-pity, a tendency I absolutely share. That song had such an impact on me that, 50 years later (and with absolutely no one even coming close to the heights reached by the original), I'm still under its spell. Hence, I've finally come up with a song with an almost identical title. I played two takes of Epiphone acoustic guitar, one take of Ibanez bass, two vocal takes, my MIDI drums (played this time with four fingers. We're improving!), and a little MIDI piano that gives it a cute minimalist touch. Ah, the lyrics of the song:

I was thinking about a phrase I often repeat, especially when I want to keep my friends from being tempted to ask me for money. And then another similar one came to mind. I figured I had enough material for a new song. I added a few more phrases like that and started playing bass, for a change. I had the phrases, which didn't rhyme or anything, but somehow I managed to sing them over what I was playing on the bass... And here's the song. I hope you like it, especially since it's a bit of a departure from what I've been doing lately (for better or for worse).
Besides the Ibanez bass, I used my Epiphone for the lead guitar, a rhythm track, my four-finger MIDI drum kit, some MIDI strings and a bit of MIDI brass, and two vocal takes (both awful, but at least the second one is barely audible). Oh, and the lyrics:

Truly, my audacity knows no bounds. I present myself here with a song so simple it almost doesn't exist. But, well, it does exist, after all. It lasts 3 minutes, which is great because it demands little time and patience from the listener. If musically it's not a display of outstanding inspiration, lyrically it's even more underwhelming. The song is about romantic relationships, that place you enter in love and come out completely devastated, often. How to explain that they so often turn out badly? Probably because they last longer than is healthy. It's like TV series. As a rule, the last season is the one you can't do without.
I played my Epiphone electric guitar (I had no other choice, nobody lent me theirs) for the rhythm and a short solo. Also my Ibanez bass. I recorded two vocal takes and two rhythm takes, a pre-recorded backing track and MIDI percussion (I'm so happy since I discovered tambourines). And also a bit of MIDI brass. At this point (whatever that may be), it's as if I've assumed there's actually someone out there listening to me. Well, it occurred to me that there was something I should say, since they were listening. The song is very simple, and the message is too, but just as the song is inconsequential, the message is the most valuable thing I can convey. Of course, it's not my own invention; I heard it from David Summers, the lead singer of a Spanish pop group, who in turn quoted his father, Manuel Summers, a film director and cartoonist, very popular in Spain in the 70s and 80s. To create such a simple song, I played an Epiphone acoustic guitar, an Epiphone electric guitar (which I converted into a slide with the help of a pen), my Ibanez bass, and my two-finger MIDI drum kit, in two takes: one for the kick and snare, and another for the tambourine. There are three takes of voices, one attached to the acoustic take, another as a second voice and a third to reinforce the chorus. Ah, the lyrics:

Well, my friends, this time the song isn't just simple. It also has a rather unpleasant whiff of pontificating. No offense intended. No one but myself is the recipient of my sermon. I'm reminding myself of my obligation to live life, instead of just pretending to, as is my custom. Musically, the song has Mexican or borderland influences, at least with Mexico. And I don't know if I'm betraying my pop roots with it. In my defense, I argue that Nick Lowe composed his masterful "Down in Mexico" during his Brinsley Schwartz days and went on to have a legendary career, which continues to this day. I think in this song, a bit of them has surfaced... Unconsciously and light years away, of course. For this tune to come after a rock piece like the previous one is something natural for me. It's incredible how I've seized the first opportunity to disprove the only rule I've ever outlined in these descriptions regarding song releases. In my last post, I said that a fast song follows a slow one. And lo and behold, after a slow one, I'm back with another slow song. Shame and disgrace upon me. Although, technically, I didn't say anything about what came after a slow one... After all, The Beatles put "Julia" after "I Will" on the White Album, so I suppose you can put an even slower song after another slow one. The song is about... that thing everyone talks about, you know, the seemingly insurmountable difficulty of making romantic relationships work indefinitely... for reasons unknown. Here are the lyrics:

Simple, straightforward, and catchy. That's what I consider a good pop song to be. I hope I've hit the mark with at least two of those three adjectives. As for the lyrics... The words "Always in the Dark" popped into my head for some obscure (obviously) reason. And the rest came later. I admit it didn't lend itself to much writing, but for a song with the characteristics I mentioned earlier, I think it's enough. I played the usual instruments and sang a few times, with the help of Abletone, which amplified my voice even further. There's strength in numbers. Ah, the lyrics:

I know I shouldn't upload songs so frequently. I'm such a pain. But I just can't keep them to myself. It's something I have to get out. And when you hear it, you'll understand why. My last song left me very satisfied, I must confess. It was like eating a piece of cake. And, of course, I had to go and ruin it by making another one, in a rush, and to be honest, I don't really like it that much. But who am I to deny its existence? I made it with all my heart and even tried to say something with it. And to give it as expressive a guitar sound as I could. And an unusual rhythm. Made with two fingers, on my computer keyboard, but with a sound that's not typical. I don't know, maybe you won't like it, but... in that case, don't say so directly. I couldn't bear it. If you do like it, then say so loudly. I have played my Epiphone acoustic, my Epiphone electric, my Ibanez bass and a MIDI take of Gran Piano (hehehe, I laugh at the Gran thing) and another of percussion, a kind of synthesized drums or something like that. Greetings. Ah, the lyrics (it's a kind of monologue directed at my wife, which, of course, is full of things I'm not going to say to her even when I'm drunk):

Is this your love

Well, maybe I've lost my mind, maybe I just decided to pick up an old Spanish guitar, made in Austria, that was lying around the house (from my wife's Austrian period), and I just played the first thing that came to mind. It's a simple song, a little sad, a little poignant, very simple. I like it that way, without any artifice (well, a little reverb... but that doesn't count). It's very short. I hope you don't find it too long.
