For this song I used a brief recording from 13 years ago, when I was trying to play the keyboard. I added the vocals and a fairly atmospheric guitar. In some way, it means a change of style compared to my previous songs. Of course, I'm still me, with my limitations.

A song that could be considered an ode to the simple brutality of man, so simple, so tender at the same time. That model we find in monsters like King Kong, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, or Frankenstein's monster. Ferocious monsters with tender hearts. It's simple. The song. And man is dying out.

Bad Girl

Another ode to depression and self-pity. This time, let's admit it, with a certain amount of energy. I hope that, despite being born from such a disastrous seed, it transmits some vigor to the listener.
An Epiphone guitar was used (more or less decently) for the rhythm section and lead guitar, an Ibanez bass for the bass (naturally), and the drums were split between a pre-recorded track and a digital MIDI (played with one finger). Two vocal tracks were used. Both, unfortunately, by me.

I've been feeling uneasy for a few days now. Uneasy and impatient. This song, with its bitter taste and truly raw feel, must have come from that feeling of discomfort. I could have polished it more, but remember, I'm impatient, so it stayed as is. I played my Epiphone guitar (a Gibson SG knock-off) a couple of times, my Ibanez bass once, and recorded my four-finger MIDI drums and a few vocal takes (I've lost count). Oh, and the lyrics:

At this point (whatever that may be), it's as if I've assumed there's actually someone out there listening to me. Well, it occurred to me that there was something I should say, since they were listening. The song is very simple, and the message is too, but just as the song is inconsequential, the message is the most valuable thing I can convey. Of course, it's not my own invention; I heard it from David Summers, the lead singer of a Spanish pop group, who in turn quoted his father, Manuel Summers, a film director and cartoonist, very popular in Spain in the 70s and 80s. To create such a simple song, I played an Epiphone acoustic guitar, an Epiphone electric guitar (which I converted into a slide with the help of a pen), my Ibanez bass, and my two-finger MIDI drum kit, in two takes: one for the kick and snare, and another for the tambourine. There are three takes of voices, one attached to the acoustic take, another as a second voice and a third to reinforce the chorus. Ah, the lyrics:

Simple, straightforward, and catchy. That's what I consider a good pop song to be. I hope I've hit the mark with at least two of those three adjectives. As for the lyrics... The words "Always in the Dark" popped into my head for some obscure (obviously) reason. And the rest came later. I admit it didn't lend itself to much writing, but for a song with the characteristics I mentioned earlier, I think it's enough. I played the usual instruments and sang a few times, with the help of Abletone, which amplified my voice even further. There's strength in numbers. Ah, the lyrics:

Well, knowing me, it was predictable that after delivering a song that, if it had any merit, was applying the "less is more" principle, I was going to complicate things with a "super production." Not missing the opportunity to multiply the possibility of making mistakes by exponentially increasing the number of risks when recording the different takes. To make matters worse, the song is... a bit arrogant (as if I knew what the hell I was doing) and depressing (it's not exactly a song to dance to in the streets). But despite everything, I must confess that I like it. It will surely lead to one of those frequent situations where the favorite work of, let's say, the creator, turns out to be one of the least appreciated by the public. Anyway, we're among friends... For those who are curious, I'll tell you that I played the usual instruments: my Epiphones, Ibanez guitars, and whatever MIDI I had on hand. Sick Pine Tree

Well, it's probably too soon to release another song. Maybe I should have waited two or three years. But it's done now, and I can't back out. If the music is debatable, the lyrics might be considered abominable. I wrote it thinking about solipsism, that theory which, if true, wouldn't make sense to spread, but which always seduces us lonely souls. A strange and cool name

Well, I've been really busy lately. Household stuff, basically. The thing is, I was feeling a bit stuck and discouraged. And I said to myself, "I need something to give me a boost, preferably something that doesn't contain any toxic substances." And it occurred to me to buy a keyboard. I thought it was the right way to get around to playing one. And, well, I received it on Sunday. On Monday I tried out some chords and yesterday I recorded the song. I'm uploading it today and I hope you like it. I played the new keyboard, which was very cheap, by the way, my Ibanez bass, and, for once, no guitar. I suppose this will add more variety to my productions. I'm really hoping you like it. Oh, the lyrics:

I held off on releasing this song for three days, even though it's finished, to avoid overshadowing my previous release. A rather futile marketing ploy, given the scant response it received. Be that as it may, I'm continuing to explore the possibilities offered by a new keyboard, bearing in mind, of course, that I barely know how to play it. Anyway, here's another song, almost romantic, almost sad, almost pretentious, almost beautiful... I had a good time recording it and I'd love for you to enjoy it. Statement number nine

Well, here I go again. And, well, it had to happen. I've written a song with a title I've used before, although the previous one was a bit longer (once again in love again). Since I'm older, I've shortened it to "once again." I'll save the "in love again" for later, when I fall back into that silly habit in my eighties or nineties. Focusing on the song itself, it's not very orthodox in any way. It's a bit strange, actually. I'm still exploring possibilities. And I'm discovering that, starting with a piano base, I can do very different things. I hope you like it, at least some of the layers covering the initial skeleton. I played my new Alesis keyboard and my old Ibanez and Epiphone guitars. I recorded the vocals in two takes, one with some technological assistance and the other, the semi-falsetto, live. 
And, well, yes. Surely someone will say that I imitate Bowie. I adore him, of course, and it is natural that some song comes out to me towards him. I don't provoke it, but I don't avoid it either. And, well, the lyrics:

Well, here I am with another song composed on my new keyboard. It's funny how changing instruments takes you down different paths. And, well, I can't help but be myself, but it seems that, to some extent, I'm someone else. Or maybe I'm a slightly different me. Aside from the keyboard and microphone, I only used my Ibanez bass to shape this experiment. It's just 3 minutes long, in which I lament that we generally don't know how to enjoy life as it could be and that we consciously or unconsciously choose to live apart. It's not a very uplifting thought, but I hope you at least like the song. Continuing with my policy of anticipating criticism, I must admit that I got a little dramatic in some parts of the song. But what's life without a little theater? I just hope I don't come across as ridiculous. Ah, the lyrics:

You're all really kind to me. Well, you're reaping what you sow, because your kindness encourages me to keep making songs. This one today... Well, I think I got a little carried away and made the most of the eight tracks Abletone gives me. One for piano and a pre-recorded rhythm, another for vocals (with a harmonic effect), another for my Ibanez bass, another for my Epiphone guitar, another for some kind of trumpet sounds, one more for a kind of vionlins, another for manually added percussion, and one more for a synthesizer that plays in the "Grand Finale." My new song isn't really new. The lyrics sound like an old cliché, and the music follows a series of chords that could practically be considered a cookie cutter. Well, if I were to think of it as a cookie, this song would be a bittersweet fortune cookie. I really enjoyed recording it because I was able to pick up the pace a bit with the piano. And in the end, I even let loose a little. The song consists of a 30-second intro, 2 minutes of regular verses, and a one-minute "Grand Finale." I hope you like some part of it. I played the keyboard (piano, trumpets, drums, percussion, a sort of string section), my Ibanez bass, my Epiphone guitar, and I recorded two vocal takes: the lead (me) and a choir of Black women (also me). I can't stand it

The other day, chatting in the comments with my admired colleague Clavdia, I was telling her that I like to sing cheerfully about sad things and vice versa. As I said this, I was thinking about this, my new song, which I already had finished. In life, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, two misfortunes can befall you: the first is that the person you love prefers someone else, and the second is that they prefer you. This song deals with the first scenario, the most common in the universal repertoire of love and heartbreak songs. Life, as is easy to see, is neither a tragedy (although it always ends with death), nor a comedy. It is, basically, a tragicomedy, in which the dramas are laughable and some jokes make you cry when no one is watching. I played my recently acquired piano, my old Ibanez bass, my Epiphone guitar, and I incorporated some programmed drums and added percussion. There's no introduction, but I have gradually introduced the instruments, so as not to overwhelm the listener with a cacophonous cacophony, leaving that rather unappealing section for the end. There's an organ sound coming from the keyboard, and the vocals have a harmonization applied by Abletone, which helps make them somewhat bearable. Oh, and the lyrics:

With the World Cup and the arrival of the summer heat, which forces me to water my garden every day, I'm running out of time for music. In my spare moments, I've managed to cobble together another little song. I didn't have many ideas, so the lyrics are short, which, deep down, is a good thing. As Baltasar Gracián said back in the 16th century: "The good, if brief, is twice as good." I played my recently acquired keyboard, which allows me to incorporate pianos, trumpets, percussion, and some other unidentified sounds. Not to mention my old Epiphone guitar and my Ibanez bass. Listening to Red Cavalry's songs and thinking about this one, my new song, I said to myself, "Carlitos (that's what I usually call myself), you've lost your edge." Well, it's not a matter of lamenting and beating my chest. It's a fact. Songs, for one reason or another, come as they come and are as they are. When I only knew how to play four chords on an old Spanish guitar, I played four chords on an old Spanish guitar. Then I learned a few more (not many) and had different guitars, a little better each time. I've never had a truly good one. And, well... all this to tell you that here's my new song and I hope you like it, although I think it's going to be difficult to categorize it. I think it's pop with neo-romantic, pseudo-operatic pretensions... or something like that. I played piano, percussion, and some strange noises on my new keyboard, my Ibanez bass, and my Epiphone guitar. And I have sung, by the way, using more volume than usual, taking advantage of the fact that my wife is not at home. Ah, the lyrics:

the boy who loves the rain

On Tuesday I uploaded a song (which, I must say, I was quite pleased with), and by Saturday I already had another one ready. What to do? Wait a few days for the previous one to reach its full potential with the eager global audience, or release it immediately? I decided on the former, as if I were a marketing expert... But today I'm already impatient to upload it. It's a song that came about, as often happens lately, while just randomly playing my new keyboard. Frankly, I don't know what I was playing; I couldn't even say what chords they were... if it was any chords at all. The thing is, it reminded me of Harry Nilsson, and... That deserves a separate comment. Harry is someone I love very much. A kind of soulmate, I won't say twin, but a soul I feel very connected to. And I'm not talking about his greatest hits, but especially his, let's say, filler songs... Those songs that filled albums that have been with me my whole life. Leaving aside the Beatles (together or separately), Harry is my most enduring idol. I love hearing him sing, no matter what. Someone who writes a song titled "Kojak-Columbo" necessarily aspires to be my object of eternal adoration. The fact is, this is my "Nilsson track." I hope you'll forgive the audacity. I don't have his otherworldly voice (no one does or ever has, anyway), nor am I such a good songwriter, but I love him dearly, and this song, in its modesty, would never have existed without him. I hope you like it. This time, there's no pre-recorded rhythm track; all the percussion you hear was recorded manually, with my fingers. I also couldn't find a place to include my Epiphone guitar (Nilsson tracks don't usually have solos). If anything, I do the solo with my mouth. Besides the keyboard, I played my Ibanez bass and recorded two vocal takes, one with reverb and the other using an Ableton trick, adding a fifth. The song's theme isn't original at all; in fact, I already used it myself in a previous song ("Dreaming On"), but, well, the idea comes from Calderón de la Barca (16th century), so we're not going to worry too much about its relevance. Oh, the lyrics:

Dreams

Well, friends, in 48 hours I've emerged from a minor crisis. The result is the song you're (presumably) about to hear. Was it worth overcoming the crisis? You tell me. The thing is, I had some time and decided to write a new song last Sunday, and... nothing happened. I couldn't think of anything. That's unusual. At first, I panicked and immediately thought I'd never write a song again. Then I told myself, "I must be sleep-deprived. Or maybe the ultra-processed food didn't agree with me." On Monday, I tried again, and I can't say the result of my efforts was satisfactory, but it seems I managed to get a tiny embryo (I suppose all embryos are small). On Tuesday, I had two migraines, and I also watched the Spain match, in which we eliminated France to celebrate their National Day. Bad luck, "mes amies." We played very well. Anyway, I managed to put a few chords together. I'd used the sequence before, but I tweaked it a bit. I also came up with a couple of phrases that weren't entirely forgettable. So today I recorded the damn song, taking advantage of not having to go to work. In the end, I managed to pull off something I can say "It's mine," without being ashamed. I hope you like it. Hugs, friends. Spain, in four days, world football champions.

I played my keyboard for the piano, a programmed rhythm track, percussion (by hand), some violins here and there, my Ibanez bass, and my Epiphone guitar. I'm glad I included a solo this time, to please my friend David.

Let me know

My new song is very basic, musically speaking. Even by my standards, it's very basic. Just three major chords: A, E and D. But, well, maybe if we understand "song" as the sum of music and lyrics, it might be salvageable. I don't know, there must be trillions of songs similar to this one, but still... let's consider that there are trillions of stars in the sky, and although they all seem the same to us, each one is unique and unrepeatable. And if you think it's pretentious to compare my song to a star, I'd rather compare it to grains of sand in the desert. Each one is unique, however much they may all seem the same at first glance. Although, of course, there's one that gets in our eye and is very annoying. I hope my song isn't one of those.
I played my acustic and electric Epiphone guitars, my Ibanez bass guitar and my keyboard to get some piano, horns, drums and percussion. 
What's the song about? Well, it's obvious. It's that unpleasant feeling you get when you're over sixty, that the world you know, the one you learned to love and admire, or even hate, while growing up, is going down the drain, or getting lost in the fog, or fading away, like a candle that inexorably burns out. But, despite that unpleasant feeling, we're still here. So... something has to be done! Ah, the lyrics:

reflections on sunset

Well, just three major chords again. This is alarming. Am I becoming dull? I don't know, this is how they've been coming lately, and I have to accept them. I hope that, despite its simplicity, someone likes it. It gave me a bit of fun making it, and, to be honest, it's quite catchy. It's about, well, those uncomfortable things that cross your mind and don't exactly make you happy, to be honest. But the songs themselves do make me happy. Making them and sharing them. I played the keyboard to create the sound of two pianos, brass, drums, and percussion. I also played my Ibanez bass (reinforcing the piano's basic bass line) and my Epiphone guitar (which comes in at the end. I mention this for those who are impatient). Ah, the lyrics:

Wild

Another basic piece. A song born from utter emptiness, without time, without preparation, and with hardly any inspiration. This Sunday morning I told myself: "Carlitos, you're getting rusty. Go and write a damn song." And, well, I sat down and, obediently, I did. I played my Epiphone acoustic guitar, my Ibanez bass, my Epiphone electric guitar, and I did the drums entirely manually on the keyboard (this time there's no pre-recorded rhythm, so it loses some perfection but supposedly gains in flexibility), a little piano here and there, a small organ in the intro, and something strange in the middle. The song is very simple, but I've at least managed to make it sound varied in its three and a half minutes (half a minute for the intro, one minute for the first verses, another minute for the interlude, and another minute for the grand finale). It's simple, and what's more, it's structured with order... and bewilderment.
