Johnny Cash (born J. R. Cash on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, and died on September 12, 2003 in Nashville, Tennessee) is an American country music singer, actor, guitarist and songwriter. He has also practiced rock'n'; roll, rockabilly, blues, folk and gospel styles.

Johnny Cash is known for his characteristic baritone voice and deep bass. His dark behaviour and clothing earned him the nickname Man In Black.

Much of Johnny Cash's music, particularly his late career, echoes the themes of pain, moral affliction and redemption, such as his songs I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm and Man in Black. He has also recorded humorous songs, such as One Piece at a Time and A Boy Named Sue, a duet with his future wife June Carter entitled Jackson, as well as train songs including Hey Porter and Rock Island Line.

With 90 million albums sold in nearly fifty years of his career, he is considered a major figure in 20th century American music. His official discography includes 55 studio albums and 6 live albums. In addition, there are 84 compilations of his recordings.

He is also known for his political commitment and action on behalf of prisoners, having performed in prisons. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 21st best singer of all time. He is also the husband of the famous country singer June Carter.
