Kieren McCarthy is a journalist on staff at The Register, and was one of the few writers to voice concerns over Atari's latest console attempt.  Kieren's skepticism escalated considerably when he met with the Atari team in person at GDC, and detailed his misgivings in the now-famous article 'We sent a vulture to find the relaunced Atari Box - and all he got was this lousy baseball cap'.  Atari responded by claiming Kieren made up the story, despite there being a recording of the meeting. 

In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Kieren and I discuss why critical thinking seems to be lacking when it comes to video-game-centric discussion, and areas where Atari could have actually released a better product, had they had a mind to.

Peter is also a long-time fan of science fiction, and has a great perspective on how fandom changed from the early days of conventions though today.  In this episode, he and I have a great talk that includes the transition between Star Trek: TOS and Star Trek: TNG, and how the Vietnam War made for a different perspective between the two shows.  We also reflect on rivalries between fandoms, how it's often an illusion, but also ways in which those rivalries can be very real.

Janene Michaelis is the author of the short story Papagaia Dream, a finalist in the "Coffee Lifts Creatives" writing contest from Sci-Fi Coffee.  Like a lot of us authors, Janene has had points in her life that simply didn't make writing a reasonable outlet.  In this episode, she and I have a great talk about how to come to terms with having to choose between writing and dealing with life crises, as well as how to use spiritual tropes mindfully-- bearing in mind that talking about someone's faith in your writing will impact different readers in different ways, depending on their backgrounds.

HTP #168 - John Vorhaus is Still Practicing!

John Billingsley (Seen in Star Trek: Enterprise as well as Episodes 68 and 154 of Hungry Trilobyte) returns with Jonathan Del Arco (Star Trek: Picard) and the two are led by Natalia Castellanos (Bosch).  Their goal is to round up as many Star Trek fans, talent, and supporters for the picketing event United We Trek, which aims to show up at the gates of Paramount Studios on Star Trek Day, September 8.  This will voice support for the ongoing strike efforts by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.  In this episode, the four of us focus on how the strike efforts can secure the quality of life of many creatives, and also how the AI components threaten people far outside Hollywood if the negotiations fail.

Bat Boughner III is the grandson of Golden Age Comic Book artist Howard Boughner.  Howard Boughner was the talent behind such creations as Mac, Peter and Polly in Toyland, Hold Everything as well as Penny and Dolly Dripple.  In addition, he was the author of the how-to guides ‘Cartooning Jobs for Beginning Cartoonists’ and ‘Dictionary of things to Draw,’ both of which were influential for generations of future illustrators.  Bat has a unique and very personal appreciation for Howard’s talents, and he’s graciously offered to share them on this episode of Hungry Trilobyte. Amanda Deibert has written for a host of top-tier comic books, like Darkwing Duck, Red Sonjia, The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries, and DC Super Hero Girls.  She's also the author of the Racket & Groot Grapx book series, and an extremely insightful writer's journal titled "You Already Have the Answers".  In recent months, Amanda has been taking her writing gifts to support a Comic Book Creator's Club, with the students at her local elementary school. HTP #200 - Jerry Carita Returns!

Back again, Jarrod Alberich gets the misfortune of walking me through the newbie stages of G.I. Joe fandom.  We get into a brief overview of the franchise, some new developments, and get to dissect why we collect and what it satisfaction it brings us.  The conversation was started after I found the G.I. Joe/Transformers collaboration featuring Kup and Sgt. Slaughter.  There's also a moment where we talk about Jarrod's service in the real-world armed forces, and what it means when you can make your ambitions a reality.

HTP #203 - Vernon Smith

David Orange is fondly remembered as the sleepy (and likely inebriated) Klingon at the observation post in Star Trek VI.  He joins Hungry Trilobyte to recall his time on the set, telling a funny story about Leonard Nimoy, and waxing philosophical on what makes great science fiction.  David is an accomplished novelist and screenwriter, and the two of us also discuss two of his projects, one of which was inspired by his time on Star Trek, the other being a novel titled Below Level 7.  He gives a very compelling taste by hinting at the story of alien abduction, Area 51, and Adrenochrome.
