Yaman is traditionally sung during the first quarter of the night.

Raga Yaman is a night raga which is very romantic in nature. This raga is often taught to beginners in Hindustani music. Some say its origin is from the Persian mode "Ei'man" from which "Yaman" originated. Others say it has Vedic origins as Raga Yamuna which over time altered as Yaman. 

Moods: bhakti, gambhir, shringar, serene, haunting 

This raga is also called Kalyan or Yaman-Kalyan. The raga has all shuddha swars except for the tivra Ma. It is this note which gives the raga its distinctive quality of peace, and tranquility. Some modernists consider Yaman, Yaman-Kalyan, and Kalyan to be one raga and only traditionalists consider these as three distinct ragas.
