Inspired by the realization that some things are better left broken than mended at the cost of one's own peace, "Lacquer and Light" explores the sharp threshold between loss and transformation.

The song draws inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the practice of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer to make it stronger and more beautiful than before. While the lyrics acknowledge that a shattered relationship may be too dangerous to "put back together," they pivot to the internal work of the individual: using that same "gold" to mend the fractures within the self.
