Portland Oregon’s Godzukey began as a solo project with a handful of songs in late spring of 2020 as the brainchild of Jonas Briggs. Taking influences from classic greats such as Johnny Cash, John Lennon and Jim Morrison, alongside of grunge pioneers Cobain and Cantrell, along with lyrical content delving into the stories of love, loss and metaphysical realm, he began writing ideas which would in turn became his first set of songs for Godzukey.

 

Briggs entered Wrong Way Recording studio and started laying down a handful of demos the summer of 2020. Along with Rob Wrong’s help, they programmed electronic drums together while Briggs performed all the instrumentation and vocals for his song creations. With the demos under his belt and out for the world to hear on streaming sites, Briggs started to put together his group of musicians so he could eventually take his musical vision to the stage and beyond.

 

Enter Conrad Bylsma, a seasoned guitar player who takes his style and direction from such legends as Peter Green and Chet Atkins, Bylsma came into the picture several months later after the initial project was set in motion. Briggs’ new right hand man in Godzukey wasn’t a new acquaintance, rather Conrad and Jonas had been friends since childhood and started playing music together many years before in High School. Bylsma and Briggs, now being the core members of the group started seeking out other members to solidify the team. After trying out a handful of different people over the course of several months, Godzukey’s current lineup was finalized in 2021 with the addition of the punk rock influenced Eric Segraves on bass guitar, who in turn brought a friend and fellow musician into the fold John Levear a percussionist on drums, who was also a former member of the Oregon State Beavers Marching Band.

 

Between 2020 and 2021 Briggs had experienced an explosion of creative energy that has led to writing nearly 50 songs. Godzukey took their well rehearsed arsenal of songs for the first time to the stage on August of 2021, and on December 2nd 2021 Godzukey entered Witch Ape Studio in Seattle Washington  with Grunge legend Tad Doyle and recorded their debut album D.E.B. You Taunt. The band now complete and with a total vision of their mission have a collection of songs that truly define what the band is capable of. Their first well thought out effort displays a sound that is reminiscent of 90’s albums from legends such as Alice In Chains and Soundgarden at the same time still retaining characteristics with staying power of older classic rock roots. 

 

Godzukey’s passion for rock music hasn’t gone unnoticed with the fans that have already seen the group perform live, and the band’s future is showing the general public and their fans alike that traditional instrument based rock is not dead. Writing, rehearsing, and playing live keeps Godzukey busy and hard at work, and they have a steadfast belief in the natural change and evolution of their music that leads to their desire of not becoming stale, or have a genre bound repeating formula.
