Notes on the first freestyle piece ‘Passion and Wonder Fantasy Impromptu’

 I let the music speak for itself…and I will say a few things for context. 

This is a freestyle. I did not prepare this, nor work from even any notes or previous themes. 

This was a cold plunge into the moment, and in my opinion, it turned out quite well.

Also, I recorded this on my phone, and finalized it in GarageBand. I have Zero experience/training in final production so I was really just playing around and I like the final product enough to share it. 

…A “fantasy” is a musical idea basically to sidestep the trappings of “genre”. I am particularly enamored with all of Chopin’s work, and so inherited the label from him. 

‘Passion’ and ‘wonder’ are respectively two driving elements of my musical experience and expression. Passion, the life-force of the Divine, the Love that calls, the Love and the Lover, I would say that magnetizes, desires, expands, soars.   The wonder is the awe, the fascination which is a pivot, a 180, to the close mind, the duldrums, the mundane, the dead-normal.  It’s like remembering how to play again, like a child does. Innocent, excited, engaged, curious, alive. Wonder is like that, and I am so blessed that music somehow continues to deliver this. 

I experience both of these in heightened states of consciousness, a type of connection or communion if you will, and they have, like two trusted hounds or steeds, moved me along in this grand journey. I pray they never leave me. I’d surely be the less without them. 

Particular to this piece, the “what’s it about”,  I cannot really say. That has been the point of late.  There are no words adequate. I don’t even want to go there!  To words…I want to FEEL the truth, not comprehend it intellectually.  Passion and wonder are what I feel, felt in this piece, and so I give those tidbits to you.

…Like I said before, this piece was completely unexpected.  I actually stopped playing, and practicing for about two to three weeks around the time I recorded this. I wanted a clean slate. Nothing routine. I wanted the unknown and in that unknown I find is the only route to the present moment, which is where Life is, wild, raw, truthful and free.
