Milan-based producer Fred Simon brings you two delicious slices of modern funk in collaboration with two of the most heralded vocalists in the scene. MoFunk Records artist Moniquea lends her voice to "Don't Go Under" while Amalia, known for her releases on Tokyo Dawn & Cherries Records, gets down on "Island Of Magic." In hearing both tracks, you can discern the formula - Clever chord progressions with a jazzy flair that come across as something of a nod to neosoul, combined with the rhythm of 1980's boogie funk, thus interpreted with analog synths and drum machines in place of a live band. You can hear the remarkable range that the style carries; on "Don't Go Under," the pace is on the urgent side, with Moniquea switching effortlessly between singing and rapping, advising you to push forward no matter what. "Island Of Magic" takes the same sound, puts a citrus-colored cocktail into your hand and sets you down on a palm-lined beach at sunset. Amalia takes the emotion of love and presents it as a physical location. In much the same way, we are bringing these two amazing tracks to physical form with a limited 7", on bone-colored vinyl, only 150 pieces pressed!

Funk producer Andrew Napoleon offers his own take on this modern funk masterpiece from Ivan Makvel and Temu. After falling in love with the track when it was released on Ivan’s album ‘A Family Affair’, the UK based producer reached out to the pair to offer a remix in his own style. The result is an 80’s-funk inspired slice of pure groove indulgence. The kind of track you would play if you were driving back to the 80’s at sunset…Vice city style! The Kashif-inspired bassline and Stevie Wonder-esque synths provide the perfect backdrop for Temu’s mesmerizing vocal harmonies.

BIO
Andrew Napoleon is a funk and RnB producer from the UK. A multi-instrumentalist and former touring session guitarist, he transitioned from live bands to music production around 2009. His early work was a hybrid of nu-disco and electro funk, influenced by the 80’s funk and soul that Andrew was raised on.

His work caught the eye of Kool & The Gang’s record label in 2011, who signed Andrew’s production duo for an album release. Andrew had the honour of being invited to remix a version of Kool & The Gang’s classic track ‘Misled’ for an upcoming re-release.
Over the next few years he dedicated himself to his craft, learning more about the art of music production. Studying directly with mentors such as legendary mixing engineer Max Heyes (Jamiroquai, Massive Attack, Primal Scream), he further developed his prowess as a producer, songwriter and mix engineer.

Andrew founded his own company Green Light Music in 2019, a boutique music production company working with independent artists all over the world. To date, Andrew has produced and written songs for more than 50 independent artists in over 20 countries. 

In 2021, Andrew was signed by Washington D.C label Return Records as an in-house producer. Owned by The Orchard/Sony ATV, the label brought Andrew’s funk inspired productions to a wider audience. He teamed up with label artist Diquan Julius on several tracks, and their track ‘Let’s Dance’ won several awards including ’Best Funk Song’ at the 2022 Wammie Awards.

The label signing was significant, as he was the only producer employed who represented the modern funk/disco sound.

In 2022 he teamed up with Mishell Ivon and the duo released their first joint EP. The single ‘U Got Me Good’ received a glowing reception from the funk community, landing on Spotify editorials and national TV ad campaigns. Andrew already has several exciting releases lined up for 2023, both as a producer and his artist project with Mishell Ivon.

Super Paolo returns to his Disco Milk Records imprint with two Nu-Disco cuts titled "Funk City" including a remix from a staple in the Modern Funk scene B. Bravo!

It's four-on-the-floor to aid with the mix, making it a versatile pivot track from Disco or House to more Funk flavours. All the usual suspects are present: talkbox, slap bass, strings, saw-synth stabs, as well as an hook on flute (flute in a Funk track?? Bring it on!). All in all, this one is a sure-shot in any Funkster's bag.

About the imprint, Disco Milk was founded in 2006 by Paolo Guglielmino aka Super Paolo, one half of the duo Tutto Matto. It’s here where he’s dropped numerous releases, such as "Planet Paolo", which embody the philosophy of creating tracks with live musicians in the studio rather than resorting to MIDI replacements. It keeps the groove proper and human, and really that's what the Funk is all about!
