Bangor-based Marathon Man were a little surprised when "Turn Around," the lead single off its debut EP, was put in heavy rotation on WHSN and WKIT the day of its release. In fact, WHSN started featuring the song in the same breath as material from Phantogram and Twenty One Pilots. But the band's an interesting case—in a region known for metal and bar bands, Marathon Man has been creating a buzz with its late-70s/early-80s inspired rock sound since its first gig almost a year ago.
 
Marathon Man began in late 2015 when Matt Chabe (vocals & guitar), a veteran songwriter and guitarist from the region, met newcomer Dustin Farley (drums & backing vocals). Together, the duo spent months crafting concise, melodic rock influenced by late-70s/early-80s rock and pop. When Frank Richards (bass & backing vocals) came onboard, the lineup was complete. "I knew right away that this was an uncommon lineup," said Chabe. "Everyone here loves melody. Everyone plays to the song."
 
With a modern sound that throws back to bands like Cheap Trick, T. Rex, Billy Squier, and Huey Lewis and the News, the band is ambitious and confident: "Our audiences have been great, they're our lifeblood," said Chabe. "People seem to dig hearing a new sound. We just want them to rock."
