Winter Melancholy

My new track ‘Shy’. This song was written, recorded and produced by myself using my acoustic guitar and an 80s synthesiser. It is one of my most minimally produced tracks (at least until the final chorus). I often tend to throw in any extra harmonies and elements that I can at my song but this one just kept rejecting them. Sometimes it’s nice just to let the melody speak for itself but it can be kind of scary from a production point of view as there is nowhere to hide. A good portion of this song is just me and my guitar which, despite classifying myself as a folk singer, is actually quite rare in my discography. I really hope it works and I hope you enjoy it. I also made a video for this featuring vintage clips of European cities on my YouTube channel, please go check it out!

Dies ist die Fortsetung meiner Musikreihe in loser Folge :
Anthologie „Nacht Musik“
Fragile einsame Selbstgespräche, zerbrechliche Zwiegespräche.

Der Weg in die Nacht und durch die Nacht mit all seinen Facetten.
Die Straßenlampen und deren mal grelles mal warmes Licht versetzen uns je nach den Wetterverhältnisse eher in eine andere dimensionale Stimmung.

Manche Menschen müssen in die Nacht hinaus. Viele haben einen nächtlichen Arbeitsweg.
Sie scheinen diesen zu kennen und sind in Gedanken versunken fast schlafwandeln auf ihren nächtlichen Weg. 

Und die, die nicht zur Ruhe kommen und in der Nacht umher wandern.
Jeder ist auf seine Art auf seinem Weg durch die Nacht.

Könnte auch ein Boulevard der Dämmerung sein in dem sich viele in ihren nächtlichen Träumen verlieren.

So begeben sich viele Menschen in ihre ganz eigene Nachtschicht.

This is the continuation of my music series in loose order:
Anthology "Night Music"
Fragile lonely soliloquies, fragile dialogues.

The way into the night and through the night with all its facets.
The street lamps and their sometimes glaring sometimes warm light put us in a different dimensional mood depending on the weather conditions.

Some people have to go out into the night. Many have a night commute.
They seem to know this and are deep in thought, almost sleepwalking on their nocturnal journey.

And those who don't get any rest and wander around at night.
Everyone is on their way through the night in their own way.

Could also be a twilight boulevard where many lose themselves in their nightly dreams.

So many people go into their very own night shift.

Piano No. 4-2: A contemplative solo piano piece — quiet, spacious, and reflective. Minimal in form yet rich in nuance, it drifts between gentle melodies and subtle harmonic shifts, inviting the listener into a moment of stillness and introspection.

The third piece in my duet set of Songs without Words
A piece in ternary form with lugubrious slow outer sections surrounding a more flowing central passage. The opening theme heard 3 octaves apart returns in the ultra-bass in the final part

When my father died, way back in 1993, I became aware of the fact that my grandmother, Doris, who had died when my father was only three years old in 1930, had never had a headstone placed on her grave in our family plot. In fact, until I was a teenager, I don't believe I was even aware that my step-grandmother Charlotte wasn't my actual grandmother. Although Charlotte was a terrific grandmother to me and the only real grandmother I ever knew and loved, I began to wonder more about who Doris Terrill Warner was since she died 26 years before I was born, when my father was only 3. My first effort to reach out to her was having a proper headstone placed on her grave, right next to my father's final resting place. Ultimately I haven't learned much more than a handful of photos can suggest, but the images have provided some happy substance to my connection to her. This song brings out the disappointments of never meeting her but consummates with the joy of realization that she is nonetheless a real part of who I am. And that is indeed a happy ending to a continuing story. As a bonus, I coerced my 89 year old mother-in-law, Barbara, into adding her whistling skills to the ending of this song as you can hear in her protestations as it all falls apart for a bit of fun.
