Whether it’s drum & bass or any form of dubstep, Norman Foreman have remained open minded and all encompassing since it’s inception in 2021. However for their next project, the New Zealand label sets it’s sights on the roster’s 140 capabilities by producing a short compilation, consisting of four huge tracks by four emerging NZ talents. 

The track list begins with a rare dubstep piece from Phrase, one of the more established producers on the project. Known more for his deep and wavy dnb and invigorating bootlegs, Phrase brings his multifaceted sounds into the 140 sphere on ‘Levels‘, offering a thunderous dose of growling reese bass pressure that vividly sets the darker tone running throughout this project.
The lesser known but equally impressive Kakuza relishes in the cold and moody atmospheres of ‘Memory Extraction‘, before today’s premiere from Chunga replicates the darkness in an even beefier setting on ‘Survival Mode‘. Similar to Phrase, Chunga‘s dnb prowess shines in the 140 space, constantly adding texture and meat to the rattling bass bones and thumping bass tones. And finally we’re punched in the face by ‘Walker‘, a pure skank face production from Burningbush. It’s a classic gun finger slinger piece reminiscent of recent heaters like Hamdi‘s ‘Skanka‘ or Wraz‘s ‘Wraith‘, where only a filthy oscillating bassline and crashing percs are necessary for this rave friendly finale.

‘Radio Crimes’ is not only a true representation of the burgeoning scene that’s come alight on the islands of New Zealand, but also expresses the untapped potential of foreign-genre producers yet to express their 140 abilities. And it’s thanks to platforms like Norman Foreman who shows that ingenuity is out there and it only takes a little encouragement and awesome compilation projects like this for them to come out of the shadows.

RustOut Records has managed to bring someone out of the shadow and into the light. With his first official release, Kwizma has shown us a glimpse of his version of the deep side of dubstep. Starting underground with “Cave Drops”, the mood quickly darkens as the heavy bass hits you in the chest paired with the iconic sounds echoing through the dark. Moving to the surface into “The Forest”, the upbeat percussion stirs things around while the bass and heavy growls are always deep-rooted in the background. Crossing over to “Blizzard”, the fast paced cymbals and high hats set the scene as you wait for the incoming storm. As it ruthlessly hits you time and time again with bassy punches, you know this is a force to be reckoned with. Kwizma’s “The Forest EP” is an all round bass weighty story, showcasing his ability to create visual scenes with nothing but sound.

This EP will come out on the 1st of March!

Recently record label DUPLOC celebrated its fifth anniversary with a few special projects. Now the leading Belgian dubstep imprint returns to its usual 2-track digital series, as they're welcoming back the Leeds based Surreal for DUPLOC036. Affiliated with DEEP MEDi plus Navy Cut, and with notable appearances on both of the previous DUPLOC SELECTS chapters, Surreal now drops two fresh originals which have been in heavy rotation. While "Pique" explores the deeper and moodier side of dubstep, "Indian Flute" bursts of energetic 140 melodies and bass weight. Excellent picks which properly represent Surreal and DUPLOC's sound.

The latest offering from Uprise Audio is clear for take off and ready to be launched into orbit. Markee Ledge delivers his much anticipated first solo record on Uprise, with a 4 track EP titled ‘Space’.
Markee is no alien to the scene, having
previously released tracks on Tempa, Artikal and also tracks on his own label Zonal recordings. Eddy Seven makes an appearance as their collaboration titled ‘Thunder’ gets included on the release.
The EP blasts off with title track “Space” which captivates us from the get go with its haunting vocal sample and hypnotic melody. This forward thinking piece of music sets the tone for what’s yet to come and has been on rotation in the sets of dubstep’s A-list.
The second offer is a collaboration between Markee and the Uprise Captain him self, Eddy Seven. The standout track “Thunder” begins with an unmistakably Seven-esq lead synth setting up the intro and prepares us for the drop. The simple but effective bass line adds sheer weight and wobble, which will undoubtedly be rumbling systems for light years to come.
“Revolutionary” is another out of this world offering, packed full of arpeggiation, FX and energy. Conjuring thoughts of Star Wars, the track would be fitting blasting out the cockpit of an X Wing, while taking on the Imperial fleet with sonic devastation. A firm favourite of people who got it on promo.
The EP returns to Earth with “Kozan Ji”. Having travelled the realms of ‘Space’, it was only fitting that the EP ends with what feels like a grounding return to our home planet. Organic tones, emotional vocals and captivating percussion elements are the body which breathes the life into this track.
These four superb tracks mark a strong solo outing on Uprise Audio for Markee Ledge. He continues to grow and hone his craft within the realms of 140 and with tracks like these which prove his versatility. This release coincides nicely with Uprise Audio touching down at Fabric on 10th May, where Markee Ledge will be playing his debut set at the venue.
