The difficulty with language is that it can be hard to articulate, decipher and change. What is said cannot be erased and taken back, it stands firm in the passage of time for a life to come. This is why such holy books have paved the way across the ages, they cannot be taken back. Nowadays it is all about a turn of phrase, depicting what may come next and rephrasing that which was mistaken. Perhaps in the future we will learn better, and take our time. 

Teniente Castillo is set to release a new EP on Playpal Music. Operating out of Madrid he creates tripped out electronic music rife with drive and bass. He is remixed by Undo.

It’s been two years since Stefan Z last released on this label, but the three tracks he serves up prove the wait has been more than worth it.

The Berlin based Canadian is the boss of the Rhombus label and is a top electronic production talent. He makes his sounds stand out with slick vocals or moving melodic elements, most likely because of his formally trained piano and trumpet playing skills. He’s had support from the likes of Sasha, Solomun and Adriatique, and his label parties in Vancouver were key in developing the city’s underground scene.

The super title track goes first and is a freaky number with spacecraft circling the groove, building tension in the melodic riffs and futurism in the drums. It’s a dramatic track with heavy, lumpy kicks and one to jolt the floor into action.

‘Borni’ is another long and involving tune, this time with more mystery and suspense in the way it builds. The drums get you marching as synths and ghoulish motifs pan about to creepy effect. It’s a real set building track that keeps you on edge.

Lastly, ‘Cipe’ is the toughest of the lot, with stiff hits and withering cosmic chords speaking of an intergalactic war. Underpinned by warm bass, it’s a widescreen cinematic affair with real beauty in the pads that eventually take over the show.

All three tracks here are mini epics that really take you on a trip.

Die Live-Qualitäten der Pentatones sind ebenso ein ganz spezieller Leckerbissen bezüglich Verausgabung für Geist und Körper. Der besonders Dancefloor-kompatible Song „Determiner“ bekommt nun, zusätzlich veredelt durch zwei formidable Remixe von Taron-Trekka sowie Mathias Kaden & Daniel Stefanik, besondere Aufmerksamkeit in der Clubwelt.

Some things are just not meant to be, but that doesn't stop them happening anyway, such is the case with Mexican/Canadian punk-techno duo ALI X x XIMENA who unwittingly crossed streams in 2016. In just the past two years the inspired and experienced duo have unleashed a relentless barrage of funky and skewed audio/video bricolage. Their first session together, along with compatriot Theo Magus, produced the single "Let's Get Naked" for Tiga's Turbo label, and what followed was an orgy of remixes for labels Nein and Roam, Bottom Forty, Wonder Stories, Phisica and Shara, and reworks and collabs with artists of weird like-minds Nark, Tkuz, Fausto, Shit, and others both esoteric and mainstream.  
ALI X is no stranger to the impenetrable darks and blinding lights having taken his former band Azari & III from the streets to the limelight, and his own extensive back catalog excessively demonstrates this, while XIMENA's vague history only intensifies the strange murk that enshrouds her, at once both fiercely hermetic and violently sociable, her internalized poetic meanderings clash nicely with her gushing DJ performances. When combined, the couple's punky 'screw-it' attitude juxtaposed with a funky troubled lovers vibe provides for challenging encounters rewarded by unexpected leaps of freedom.

The Welcome To My World EP shows the journeys Ali X x Ximena can take you on, from slugging bouts of confusion and disorder to the heart pounding grit of dark and cavernous dance floors, each track on the album from original to remix shows off the cool and independent techno style of Mexico perfectly.

It’s 2020, the dusty Pets plain spreads out before you. Nothing but sand, cactus plants and a bottle of good old red eye are all you have for company. Then you hear the shots. They’re fired with such flare they can only be from one man… Renato Cohen AKA the ‘Lone Ranger’
He fires in such a way you can’t help but move your feet. Then you move your hips. Then your head. Then your heart. You’re in funky town now and Renato’s the mayor. He leads with the disco bubbles and slinky restrained funk of ‘Lone Ranger’ before moving on to the heavier weaponry; the cowbell riddled, hoover-rattled stomper ‘Deocleciana’ and the bassline-plunging, deep funk hustling swagger of ‘Bismuth’.
And it seems our lonesome techno patrolman isn’t working alone… ‘Bismuth’ is also backed by an incredible remix from Jennifer Cardini. Ramping up the energy with a precision arpeggio bassline and injecting an entirely different sense of uplift with a lavish synth melody, it shoots from the hip in the most euphoric of ways.

Two decades. Twenty years. Twenty compilations. Over 400 tracks. Over two days of total playing time and countless coloured dots. If someone would have told us in 1999, when we put together TOTAL 1 that this would turn into one of the longest standing compilation series in techno world we would have laughed out loud. But here we are – in the year 2020 which will probably go down in history as the most difficult period ever for club culture. But we won’t stop doing what we’re doing. Music is our oxygen. We’ll dance together soon again.

The TOTAL series has always been like KOMPAKT’s yearbook and to say it with the late Frank Sinatra: It was a very good year. Our family of artists delivered a strong heterogeneous mix of uplifting sounds, from the lush reveries of ROBAG WRUHME and SOELA to the stark primetime bangers of MARC ROMBOY or ANNA & KITTIN and everything in between. Notable new entries to our crew are the Londoner KIWI with his wonderfully careless “Hello Echo” that picks up the camp disco vibes Justus Köhncke made a staple in our repertoire. Amsterdam’s DAVID DOUGLAS delivers an appetizer for a full course meal. His quirky pop approach sits comfortably between fellow dutchmen WEVAL’s abstract beats and AGENTS OF TIME’s opulent Italo Disco. YOTAM AVNI blends Detroit techno with new age jazz that reminisces the sound of ECM artists like Jan Garbarek or John Surman. The man with the hat, KÖLSCH also picks up jazzier notes in his very own big room style. Youngblood JONATHAN KASPAR appears twice, fortifying his status as one of the hottest beat smiths of our hometown Cologne. TOTAL wouldn’t be TOTAL without our permanent staff present in full force. As per tradition, KOMPAKT’s founding fathers, VOIGT & VOIGT, JÜRGEN PAAPE, JÖRG BURGER, MICHAEL MAYER as well as our Berlin outpost SASCHA FUNKE all deliver exclusive gems that also feature on Total 20’s double vinyl edition.
