LXV - Below The Line Mix

I took an image that I made in GIMP and ran it through a spectrogram-maker (http://victorx.eu/BitmapPlayer.htm) to turn it into audio. I edited the image and ran it through again five times, so this piece of music is actually six in one! I had a slight hiccup when saving the file, so I experimented with importing it as raw data into Audacity. This is the result of so much databending.

Modular synth master Richard Devine’s music moves like a slightly unhinged force, in rapid clicks and metallic thrums or funk addled scattering beats. An Atlanta-based producer with full length releases on Warp, Schematic, Sublight and Detroit Underground in the past 15 years, as well as an accomplished sound designer and maker of synthesizer kits (among soundtracks and samples, he’s built an expansion pack for Moog Music’s Animoog app), Devine made huge professional inroads in the digital realm, yet recently felt called to the modular and analog in his own music. Constantly reconfiguring his own hardware systems, Devine creates music by processing layer after layer of sounds derived from hip hop, pop, field recordings and electronic tracks; and in 2013 released his own official sample library, The Electronic Music Manuscript, through Sony Creative Software. Performing live, he’s equipped with an enviable arsenal of sounds and the ability to manipulate them to his experimental liking, constructing a sonic experience that’s never the same twice. MUTEK 2015 marked Devine’s first live modular set in Canada and the premiere of his “Disturbances” live patch, custom built for organic on-the-fly songwriting, from abstract ambient compositions to rhythmic bombardments.

Listening to Kraftwerk's music practically catapulted me into this avant-garde direction; I have now fused together four styles to create an unholy noise whose themes take a look back at how communication (from simple telecommunicationss networks to social media) has become so polluted and so... ...well... ...noisy. It is quite disturbing how the image of Yeshua (Jesus), a man whose moral sense brought revolution to the world two millennia ago, has become part of a mutated order which constrains the beliefs of people and has given rise to fundamentalism. He would cry if he saw the mess of the world today, as his words (and many other things) have been tainted by quests for domination.

From the abyssal noise devouring the psychedelic wailing of “Sentient Scourge”, to the whiplash-inducing beats of “Weaponize”, the rule-breaking, ambitious <b>Inutilis</b> continues to build on Rose Red Flechette’s broken, polymetric, psychedelic industrial sound, using ever-higher BPMs, incorporating hip-hop backbeats, eschewing samples, and featuring longer, almost symphonic tracks with rhythms that defy resolution. Taking the Latin term for “useless, unserviceable, without utility” as its namesake, it was composed with the refusal of industrial music to follow rules, or to be a tool or product with a function, in mind.
