RELIC Show - Lowertone Residency

A few weeks ago, extremely talented artist Gumsoul took over the reigns for our monthly show. In just under an hour, Gumsoul honed in on an a sound and vibration that is inherited into his own works.

For the fifth entry in RELIC's Lowertone residency, we invite co-founder NYAJOW to take us through their world of sound. Throughout the hour, they weave through groovy house and disco, all with a sincere emotional hint. One moment a tune feels euphoric, the next is all focus on the dance floor. This mix features the likes of Laurence Guy, Felipe Gordon, Hanna, Fred Again and our very own Aught.

After Dinner Mints 028 w/ Clifford [Relic]

Joining forces, Clifford and Friezewood present a collection of high tempo tunes sealed together through some delicious mixing. In the first half, Clifford plays sharp garage tunes that transition from the jittering percussion to four on the floor beats. In the second half, Friezewood takes us further down the BPM spectrum into jungle territory, bouncing between timbres that are bound by the breaks and snare hits that makes jungle so exciting.

An hour of unbound chaos brought to your through the magical dj hands of Clifford and Friezewood.

After Dinner Mints 030 w/ Clifford

Between street lamps and rain drops lie bright hues; parallel to the acoustic soup reflecting off of concrete towers. Trying to find yourself between reflection and reality, trajectories inter-tangle to thick haze. A heavy hum lies across your existence, encompasses you and holds you. Throughout it all you are grounded by a central thump.

Borderline Buried Alive! is a collection of three tracks by Clifford, Nyajow and Gumsoul. Nyajow takes their spin and seems to translate the perspective behind the wheel. Sputtering percussion flicks over rolling bass; rain streams across the windows horizontally. Gumsoul coins the term 'Brukstep'. A story of two halves; the throbbing low end that deeply contrasts to the uncontrollable juggling across the high frequency spectrum.

'And Then They Run' is the result of a 3 year project starting back in November 2017. The collection of tracks is a direct product of the sounds that have been absorbed throughout the time of Soba's existence. This five track EP now acts as an introduction to the vast and deep sounds that Soba have created throughout this duration. 

Throughout the EP, the variation of genre and sounds is the evidence of influence that Soba have taken from their environment. On 'Valhalla', enormous synthesiser melodies are swamped by the dark and twisted voices of those that have preceded us. Whilst on 'Final Breaths', the movement of air exceeds thumping kicks that propel the movement across the piece. The use of synthesisation and recordings accumulate the warmth and serenity of music that give Soba the ability to produce evocative dance music embedded within reality. 

A summation of underground sounds from the likes of Four Tet, Daniel Avery and Mall Grab; whilst combining their unique perception of ambiance allows Soba to excel to heights and sounds that master the excellence of dance music. In between the addictive rhythms and melodies, there is meaning and warmth that only exists within natural forms.
