The second album for the DiN imprint by British Electronic Musician Scanner sees Rimbaud utilising a different toolset from his first album, An Ascent (DiN63), released in July 2020. Here he focuses in on several Elektron instruments such as the Analog Four, Analog Rhythm and Digitakt. Whilst his debut album was forged live in his studio during the start of the global pandemic here Rimbaud was after a lighter, more optimistic tone.

Rather prophetically Rimbaud states that this album was indebted to the work of the Ukranian film maker Laris Shepitko. Indeed the title of the sixth track “Artemovsk” references the birth place of Shepitko. Furthermore the title of the album, “The Homeland of Electricity”, is taken from her 1968 film which was commissioned by the government to celebrate the October Revolution’s 50th anniversary, but was rejected by the authorities for not being patriotic enough.

At times the music has a sense of blissful calm such as the opener “You and Me” with layers of texture slowly rising & falling to unveil hidden depths to the soundscape. Rimbaud’s love of the human voice as a musical element can be heard in the tracks “Another Aircraft”, “Artemovsk” and “At last it moves into silence” albeit with very different sonic outcomes. Fluctuating between darker elements displayed in such tracks as “Air in the Air” and “Beginning of an Unknown Century” in the end the album reveals a sense of hope which is no more apparent in the joyous simplicity of “Acentria”.

As Rimbaud puts it “this album feels like a sound polaroid of this exact moment in time, capturing our times in atmospheric sound works, where light will be found again, even in the midst of struggle”.

Wa Wu We is the artist alias and label from Sebastian Mullaert. This is the third chapter, crafted in the Swedish woods. The fi rst 6 episodes of the Wa Wu We label will form a collection of records, united by their signifi cant and unique cover art and the way they’ve been recorded; this being the focus on improvising expression, resting in meditation and the nature surrounding Sebastian’s studio. All 6 of these episodes will be limited to 500 copies each.

newa's new wonderful track hedgehog inspires us deeply - the result: some outstanding remixes. Each remixer kept the beautiful mood alive that newa created in her original version while giving it its own particular touch. a really groovy, subtle and hypnotic tune from esko, a huge version that feels like absolute freedom from martin nonstatic, and a deep ambient and visionary remix by frank sebastian. Some introductory words from newa: 

subspiele: Looking at your latest release on subspiele, one must admit that you always find very special names for your tracks! How did you come up with the name "hedgehog" ? 
newa: i call my tracks what it feels like... when i was a kid i loved that old russian cartoon "hedgehog in the fog", when i've finished the track i found that i had similar emotions which i had during watching this cartoon in the childhood, so i wanted to call it hedgehog. 

subspiele: how did you record these wonderful sounds? did you use specific synths or anything else? 
newa: i recorded some live loops, i didn't use specific synths i just listened what sound fit together in my mind. 

subspiele: what is your next project? 
newa: i'll wait for the inspiration. i don't plan. 

subspiele: how do you feel now? 
newa: i feel very nice to be a part of subspiele family and really honored that amazing artists have made great remixes of hedgehog. just looking forward to the release. 

subspiele: what are you dreaming of? 
newa: dreaming of having lots of sounds to experiment with and possibilities.
