Joey Lugassy's singer songwriter journey has taken him everywhere from front man in London's Prog Rock scene to walking the red carpet after receiving two Emmy nominations for Best Original Song in a Drama Series (ABC/Disney), to singing for Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh, and luminaries such as Jack Kornfield, Robert Thurman, Joseph Goldstein, Ram Dass and Sharon Salzberg. Whether performing his library of original singer songwriter material or chant compositions, one thing always comes through, as Grammy nominee, Jai Uttal puts it - "Joey Lugassy's songs and chants are filled with warmth and musicality and his voice beautifully conveys deep longings of the heart." As a student and teacher of metaphysics, Lugassy is renowned for his non-sectarian approach to kirtan, viewing Hindu deities as archetypal metaphors of consciousness which can be accessed by anyone. His kirtan is a blend of original compositions, traditional Sanskrit, and an occasional nod to familiar pop songs (Bowie, Beatles, Van Morrison and others) 'that all reflect and give insight to this sacred path we're on together.'
Known for his wide spectrum of genres including rock, soul and world, Lugassy's introspective, quirky lyrics and evocative ballads make one think and feel deeply. Lugassy’s other professional highlights include writing a song for an Amnesty International human rights campaign and composing a rock musical (Adam), in pre-production. Joey tours the globe performing his original singer songwriter material, leading kirtans and workshops and when the stars align; playing, sweating and praying all over the world with wife and world renowned yoga teacher, Micheline Berry.
