This piece attempts to express in musical terms London U.K ,including surrounding urbanised areas ,as it is today. Characteristics include the 
background  quiet roar of sound,day and night,and the lights of the city showing on the clouds during hours of darkness.This is expressed by a drone-like sound,at a higher and a lower note,throughout most of the piece.A third characteristic is the opportunity it offers everyone to do their own things and 
have a peaceful life most of the time but with interruptions of noise and traumatic events occasionally,the former being expressed by peaceful and more harmonious passages,the latter by noisier and sometimes very discordant sounds.The former is shown as more common than the latter.Rain is expressed by tuneless,keyless piano solos. The various sections and movements are an attempt to express the  work carried on,the varied architecture and open spaces and the culture ,social life and leisure.
                  The first two or three minutes imagine being on an aeroplane arriving in London in daylight ,descending through the clouds in to rain and,using synthesiser,the sudden view of the expanse of London and its setting, from Berkshire right  through to the Thames estuary, After a 12 -second break we are in London at night,with the ambient quiet roar and the light reflected on the clouds are expressed. This is joined now and again by brief piano music suggesting that work does go on ,albeit at a lower level,thought the night.This continues for a minute,followed by 14-second break.     
The morning rush-hour follows ,the noise and activity of this expressed in a brief cacophony using several instrumental sounds,over a half-minute.. 
The foregoing takes about 14 minutes The next seven minutes or so  attempts to express the various types of work,including older industry  and offices and newer  technology ,the port ,construction ,education,research ,transport ,culture etc. .
After a break of 22 seconds there is for the nest six and a half minutes  an attempt musically to express the various architecture-homes and other types of buildings- streets ,open spaces and the broad sweep of the Thames.Following another break ,this time fourteen seconds, There is a continuation of this,intermixed with attempted references to the lives of the wide range of people in the city. There is some attempt here to note social issues and conflicts,including homelessness,depreciation   and inequality .After another 14-second break these themes are continued. This section lasts a full twenty minutes and perhaps can be seen as the core of the whole symphony.After another 14-second gap the same themes continue for another seven and a half minutes.
There now follows a break of 18 seconds leading to the final sections. For two minutes there is a sequel to the daytime arrival by air- by  a night-time departure,with synthesiser expression of a view of the whole area with all the myriad lights of streets and buildings  stretched out below.
After a 22 second break the final two minutes or so are back in London,with some return to earlier them,suggesting that this city continues regardless of whether or not any particular person is present in it.
