This piece was composed in 1999 in collaboration with oil painter Jeff Hengst. Together, we created eleven oil paintings and a piece of music with eleven sections, with a duration of 45 minutes. The Eleven Portraits Suite is a shortened version, which contains five of the eleven portraits.
Composing this piece represented a huge leap in learning for me. When first presented with the project, I assumed that I would be composing music inspired by the subject matter of the paintings. Soon, though, it became clear that the intersection of painting and music was found in a deeper place than that – our arts meet better in terms of texture, color, form, energy, harmony, physicality, tension, brightness, etc. I learned to compose and listen to music from these places, which in turn lead to rhythmic, melodic, registral, timbral, and harmonic choices. These paintings, all of which are of people, are highly energetic, saturated with color, are quite raw in terms of both content and technique, and run the full gamut of emotional expression.
For the premiere, the gallery was kept dark except for stand lights and a light on the painting that aligned with the current movement of the piece. Very slowly, butoh dancers, from Dappin’ Butoh, revealed the painting as the previous one was being covered.
The flute, viola, and cello all utilize extended techniques, including quarter tones, while the notation is still standard. For me, this piece represents my eureka moment of understanding how to create a musical language that uses quarter tones, where they serve a function and are not used as “color tones.” This still remains my favorite use of microtones in my music.
