A Conversation with Neuroscience-Based Artist Julia Buntaine.

In October 2017, the ADRI hosted the director of the SciArt Center and editor-in-chief of SciArt Magazine—neuroscience-based artist, Julia Buntaine.
 
Based in New York City, Buntaine traveled to Penn State to provide a dialogue on what it’s like to wear multiple hats in the “SciArt” world, along with a workshop to help artists and students assimilate various applications of their skills outside of the art studio.

Cynthia White is a filmmaker and research associate in the Arts & Design Research Incubator (ADRI) at Penn State. Her work as a filmmaker and multimedia artist has been screened, broadcast and presented at conferences in the US, Australia, Mexico, and Chile.  

White talks about her “Microbial Migrations” project exploring human and animal interactions as a visual language for the microbial worlds we can’t see; her passion for story and characters and how that passion led her to the medium of documentary film; and the ways in which her connections within the ADRI and through other interdisciplinary research centers have influenced her work.

Elisha Clark Halpin is an embedded researcher at the Arts & Design Research Incubator and associate professor and associate director for instruction in the School of Theatre at Penn State.

In this podcast, Halpin talks about learning to think of herself as a researcher, how health problems in her own life led to exploration in the area of releasing trauma through movement, the ways in which joining the ADRI has fostered her research, and her desire to serve the larger community with this work.

From the body temperatures of arctic squirrels to hurricanes to heart rate variability and much more, Mark Ballora has taken scientific data and turned it into sound in a process known as sonification.

In this podcast, Ballora explains what sonification is, how important it can be to scientific research and various projects he's worked on as well as how the ADRI has helped him with his work.

Andrew Belser is the director of Penn State’s Arts & Design Research
Incubator (ADRI), professor of movement, voice, and acting in the School of
Theatre, and the 2017-18 Penn State Laureate. He is also the director and
producer of FaceAge, an award-winning video installation, with community
engagement, featuring intergenerational interactions.

In this podcast, Belser discusses launching the ADRI as a vibrant research
space for artists and designers; the importance of having a visible space where
researchers can come from outside the arts and design spheres—in areas such
as neuroscience and health—to collaborate with artists and designers; his
role in helping artists to realize the viability of their work through
participating in a center that fosters visibility, project funding and growth,
and peer mentoring; goals for the immediate and long-term future of the ADRI; and more.

The ADRI Podcast: Andrew Belser discusses the creation of the ADRI and its future

Operating within the College of Arts and Architecture Research Office, ADRI provides seed funding, technical support, and workspace to high-impact arts and design research projects that, although often in their initial stages, have a strong probability of attracting future external funding. In keeping with goals outlined in the College’s strategic plan, ADRI projects are typically collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature, push methodological boundaries, link research and teaching, make innovative use of technology, engage with university-wide research initiatives and priorities, and have the potential to garner national and international recognition. ADRI also coordinates and hosts a range of programming designed to foster and support innovative arts research and its broad dissemination.
