Standing out in the overcrowded DJ world is not easy. To do so when you're just 17 is almost unbelievable. But that is when Belgian-born AliA (@aliamusicc) first started making people take note of her fresh selections and technical skills on the decks. They were way beyond her years and since then she has gone on to become a resident at Belgium’s HORST Festival and a guest at the likes of Worldwide, Dimensions and Lowlands. 

This week's mix is pure vibes. It shows off AliA's ability to seamlessly join dots between seemingly disparate sounds: in her hands a transition from lo-fi house to breezy jazz-funk is easy. A lush vocal cut into dark and dirty bass rhythms? No problem. It all adds up to a selection that will be suited to any occasion, from a pre-party warm-up at home to a long drive in your car. Good music is good music, no matter the speed or style, and never is that more obvious than when listening to AliA do her thing.

"This mix is a love letter to the emotion-driven, vulnerable, and melancholy side of my sound -- one I have not tapped into for quite some time-- in the form of weightless jungle and ambient. Through the process of creating this mix, I wished to reconnect with myself as an artist at this moment without the influence of a dance-floor, tuning into the self-reflective spirit of the winter."

The Bay Area dance music scene formed Eugenia's roots as a DJ, where she cut her teeth playing underground clubs and organizing DIY raves. Her energetic mixing style can be defined as bright, tender, and highly dynamic, jumping across many genres of dance music wrapped in a lush atmosphere -- always with her signature touch of sass. While Eugenia grew up between the Bay Area and northern Italy, she is currently based in Boston where she plays with local queer collective Enter the Boudoir. Fresh from her sets at HOR Berlin, Fast at Work in Los Angeles, Boiler Room in Boston, and Sound Gymnastics in Brooklyn, she continues to blossom further and curate her own sound. 

Outside of performing, Eugenia is a practicing poet and host of a genre-non conforming, ambient-inspired mix series called "The Shape of Memory," as a part of experimental label Ghunghru, where she asks each artist to express a memory through the arc of a mix. The spirit of this series is to re-imagine memory as a breathing, living being, one that influences our feelings and sense of self.

Xi'an-born and Toronto-based producer, pianist, and DJ Ciel steps up for the next Phonica Mix with a slow building club room warm up. With a selection of deep and chugging bass, house and techno this is a mix that equally see itself lending its ears to the home listener as well as the club dancefloor frequenters. Its this diverse sound that has seen Ciel take the helms of some of the greatest clubs, festivals, radio shows and podcasts as well as releasing solid records on labels like Mister Saturday Night, Peach Discs, Coastal Haze and more her sound is truly solidified through these outputs.
