Steely Dan are beloved for being a rock band that is the antithesis of what a rock band should supposedly be. Forgoing the usual path of endless touring and explosive live performance, the core duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker focussed their energies in the studio. Over the years, they headhunted a rotating cast of incredible session musicians to execute their lofty and intricate musical projects, indebted to jazz as much as it was to the traditional rock canon. The music soundtracked Fagen's tales of modern malaise, laced with arch humour - a key facet of their now cult status.
