Richard Trudgen and Maratja Dhamarrandji connect sometime after Maratja suffered from a stroke and discuss issues that Yolŋu are facing on a daily basis. 

During Maratja time learning to speak again he had listened to the latest podcasts on Northern Land Council, which had sparked many questions for Maratja. He discussed with a lack of good communication is not very helpful for Yolŋu. They are being kept like mushrooms in the dark. When Balanda have to make decisions they have all the information in front of them so they can think about it properly make good decisions. For Yolŋu to be involved in beneficial programs there has to be a good flow of information.

Nikunu Yunupingu discusses how the Northern Land Council is speaking to mining companies, government and stake holders, but not to the Estate Holders. This is also an issue when there are changes to legislation. He points out how proper consultation is not met with Indigenous and First Nations People.

In this podcast Gill Campbell and Shelley Houghton talk about diabetes in Yolngu Matha.
This is a set of 6 separate recordings which discuss what causes diabetes, how our bodies work, and how diabetics can best look after themselves. Other subjects covered are; the role of insulin and the pancreas, how too much sugar and fat in our bodies makes diabetes worse, and the effect on veins, blood pressure, heart, brain (stroke) eyes, kidneys, and feet. 
Some medications are also explained. This is a great resource in helping Yolngu understand the whole subject of diabetes and can also be useful for Western medical staff as an information tool for their Yolngu patients.
This Podcast was created in 2004 with Shelly Houghton and Jill Campbell.

Podcast 5:  Marijuana and its effects on the body

Djiniyini Gondarra and Richard Trudgen discuss the basics of Melioidosis.  There are often outbreaks in the wet season in the Northern Territory, with up to 10 Yolngu people across the Arnhem Land region dying from the disease every year.

They discuss the location of the bacteria and that they multiply quickly. They also talk about how Yolngu with an immune deficiency of any kind (diabetes, renal disease, lung disease or hazardous alcohol use) are at higher risk of getting it. Prevention and the availability of medication is also discussed.

"We need the real story of how sniffing kills the brain?”

This important podcast tells the true story of the damage that "choke choke", "hang hang" and avgas, petrol or glue sniffing has on people. It explains the important of oxygen to the brain and discusses how these activities can cause permanent damage to the brain in as little as 30 seconds and can quickly lead to death. 
It discusses how many adults in Yolngu communities don’t understand the seriousness of the issues and that Balanda have assumed that Yolngu have the same knowledge about these substances as they do. Yolngu adults are only now catching up on post industrial information that the wider Australian community take for granted. 
In 2018 there is little or no knowledge about oxygen starvation and how it kills the brain in Yolngu communities. The mainstream community has failed to teach this vital information to Yolngu adults.  This podcast give Yolngu a lot of information around this subject in their own language.

Podcast 10:  The real story about petrol sniffing

Nikunu Yunupingu and Richard Trudgen discuss the Coronavirus. Yolngu hear the Coronavirus is coming to their communities but they’re not sure what it’s about. This is the first of many programs on this subject that will share information as it’s updated about the Coronavirus, including its spread and control.

Richard has done a full investigation of the subject from Government Health Department sources and the World Health Organisation. Meanwhile Yolngu coproducers have been investigating what Yolngu know and their points of confusion and concern. These programs are aimed at filling in the knowledge gaps that Yolngu have in relation to the subject and other connected subjects which may include;

* how does it move from one person to the other?
* is coronavirus a lifelong sickness?
* what is a virus?
* what are the role of immunisations?

Initially Richard and Nikunu talk about the spread of the disease, explaining that it emerged in Australia in March 2020 and began slowly. They then explore how the virus moves by people carrying it inside their bodies to different places, including around the world via plane travel. They discuss how the virus can be carried by people who might not be very sick, but they are still infectious and can pass the virus on to others. (We use the Yolngu term dawala, which talks of fit healthy young people who an carry viruses and pass them on to elderly or sick relatives.) We also introduce the information that the life cycle is approximately two weeks long.

In the second program we introduce the names of the Coronavirus and COVID-19. Nikunu asks if this is a lifelong sickness. (This is one of the points of confusion that many Yolngu have.) It’s explained that it’s only a short sickness of about two weeks. Throughout this time people might be infectious even if they only get a mild sickness. If they’re not sure they should self-isolate for two weeks and it’s explained this becomes necessary as a strategy to stop the virus moving through communities.

Nikunu explains how we do not need to be too concerned about dawala Yolngu, fit healthy young people. The main concern and attention needs to go towards the elderly and the large number of people who are already sick in Yolngu communities.

The question is asked “What happens after 2 weeks?” Richard shares a lot of information about the immune system and white blood cells. This information is built on the Yolngu worldview around their zoological knowledge. This is necessary so people can see clearly how the immune system works and also how immunisation works.

We make it clear that there is no immunisation for Coronavirus yet, and it might take two years for it to be produced. However, doctors might ask people on community to have the standard flu injection so their body is not fighting this season’s flu and the Coronavirus at the same time.

In the final section of the program the information is summarized, paying particular attention to the English words that Yolngu will come across. During the program Yolngu say they’ve been very scared about what they’ve seen on TV and in other places and it’s good at last to get some real information.

Podcast 73: (COVID-19) Introduction to the Coronavirus.

These podcasts are recorded as a dialogue in both English and Yolŋu Matha. They are an opportunity for Yolŋu people to gain both basic and advanced knowledge across a whole range of subjects, including health, law and governance etc. 

Designed to fill the information gaps that contribute to the marginalisation of Yolŋu communities they are an educational tool that can be used by Yolŋu and also mainstream Balanda educators, medical staff and community workers. The dialogue format and the questions that arise are driven by Yolŋu co-producers who also undertake all the program research in their communities in North-East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. 

The level of confusion most Yolŋu have around academic English words and contemporary issues is largely due to a genuine lack of culturally appropriate information in a language they can understand. This demonstrates why most government programs fail. These podcasts are community driven and aim to empower Yolŋu by providing access to knowledge in their traditional language Yolŋu Matha.
