Lily and Vanessa are co-first authors on Study Protocol called “Treatment of early hypertension among persons living with HIV in Haiti: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial”, and shared their perspectives on publishing this particular protocol, as well as the relevance of protocols in general for credit and recognition of research.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Protocols and Recognition, a live panel discussion as a part of our weeklong Scientists for Open Science program. There is more to research than articles. Resources like study designs, protocols, code and methods; raw data and images; preprints, peer reviews and commentary are research in and of themselves—and researchers deserve academic credit for their contributions in these areas.

Open Science practices create new opportunities for researchers to easily build a positive reputation and advance their career. Publishing under an Open Access license and sharing other Open Science artifacts maximize reach and citation potential. Open Science tools like registered reports, preprints, and incremental publication give researchers more control over the publication cycle, so you can establish priority and share progress in advance of grant applications or tenure reviews. Tools like ORCID and CRediT help to track your contributions with less manual work, and ensure that authorship and peer review are properly attributed, even if you have a common name, or if your name changes.
