from #Chicago originally  near Loyola/Irving Park grew up between Evanston, the suburb directly north and the city. Everyone around me had an extensive collection of music just about if not everything in western music a pretty big chunk and all genres. On the bus trip to Camp Timberly, age ten, thanks to the driver, I heard funk for the first time as he had it on the radio the whole three hours each way. My father had an early promotional copy of Prince's first album, Controversey (our neighbor was a record promoter) which is a whole different vibe from his later stuff I would imagine pre-Jehovahs Witness .....also New Wave, Disco, Mozart, musicals, California rock a la Eagles Fleetwood Mac, Woodstock ("gimme an F--U---what's that spell....." ).....Moody Blues, Steely Dan......I try to keep an open mind I'll add as I remember Clockwork Orange I made a tape of that for myself ?? Beatles Devo Talking Heads Queen Stray Cats ......I was around six or seven I begged my parents, or whoever asked what I wanted for my birthday, for Donna Summer album after I'd heard her stuff for the first time: it was Bad Girls ......also through school 90s/early 2000s techno, house was madly obsessed mostly stuff I bought that was imported.....I didn't have much interest in what was on the radio (in NYC it's famously awful, not so for Chicago, Detroit, Long Island or Jersey where really killer amazing experimental stuff was played idk why not in the city)
