Portland Girls is about how girls and guys compare themselves to the endless beauty standard that social media (specifically Pinterest weirdly enough). I replaced “Pinterest Girls” with “Portland Girls” to code my insecurity of comparing myself, hence the whole idea of the song. This song could be under the same category as Conan Gray’s, “Heather,” but I’ll let you decide!

This song was made in a few hours as part of the Immersion Composition Society. 

The percussion loop at the beginning is by Michael Mellender. 

The lyrics are an edited version of the Rhinoceros Sutra - one of the oldest Buddhist texts. 

The chanting and shakuhachi are "Shithi-kangosan" from the album "Shomyo - Buddhist Liturgical Chant."

Through "Longing", I'm searching a state of balance between elements. For example: self vs others, free tempo vs consistency, improvisational vs notated, repetition vs changeable, individuality vs coexistence, reality vs imagination etc. In my opinion, you won't realize these contrasts unless you put them together in one place. You need to be oppose to others to keep your individuality, but the same time, you need to embrace others as well. Listening to yourself and others the same is not that easy. In the whole, the spark in this piece is created through all these embracement and contradictions.
