Japanese liken the Milky Way to the celestial river. There is a story that originated in China. Vega(Orihime) and Altair(Hikoboshi) were a young and happy couple. But for some reason they were separated by the river. They were allowed to meet once a year, on July 7th. Orihime tried to see Hikoboshi on that day. But the river was too high and there were no bridges. Then the magpies spread their wings and bridged the river for her and she could finally see him. I was impressed that such thoughtful magpies got her out of trouble.
