CIA Counterintelligence chief James Jesus Angleton often described his work using a quote from T.S. Eliot, calling it “a wilderness of mirrors.” From a feud between James Baldwin and Richard Wright in the cafes of Paris to Herbert Marcuse’s rise as the prophet of the New Left to bankrolling contemporary art and writing institutes, intelligence agencies have always seen artistic and literary spheres as vectors for disrupting dissent and reshaping radical ideas in order to serve ruling interests. Why is the outgoing president of the Poetry Foundation also a CIA contractor? Were Sam Cooke and Paul Robeson targets of MK-ULTRA? Was H.D. the darling of the OSS? And what exactly went down when the Russian Ambassador to Turkey was assassinated in an art gallery in 2016? Weaving together literary history and cultural criticism with original new research of recently-released FOIA documents, tonight’s episode of Inpatient Radio explores in depth how Western governments actively intervene in artistic movements and scenes not only to control ideological opposition, but also in order to carry out experiments in semiotics, crowd psychology, and extra-sensory phenomena.
