We interviewed Chinese Laundry resident and Sydney legend Tay G.

Interview :

When did you start djing – what or who inspired you ?
I started djing last year after I competed in Yourshot. I have always been into music and have always been drawn to djing. I remember when I was in Year 10, an older friend of mine who was a DJ at the time gave me a purple USB full of house, techno, minimal, dance & progressive house music. He knew I wanted to learn so I would play around the music on virtual dj, sometimes playing it on the aux at house parties. That was the first time I was really introduced to real house & techno music and spent hours learning from that one USB. I remember seeing Flava D play at lost paradise the second year I went and that one the stand out moment for me when I knew I wanted to pursue djing. She was playing at a smaller stage and we could see from the resting area that the stage was going off so we all ran over to join in, had the best time and I just knew I wanted to be able to have that effect on people. A few weeks before YS registration day a friend of mine who ran events at out local club offered to show me the basics before the event started and then told me about YS.
What were some of your main challenges and goals when starting as a DJ?
The main challenges I faced would probably be the fact I lived on the central coast and didn’t know anyone in Sydney ( at all ) when I started. After Yourshot, I knew I wanted to really try my best with djing and knew that I didn’t have many friends in Sydney so I spent a few months going to events, promoting, networking & finding which clubs were my vibe and looking at how the djs interacted with the crowd. I got minimal sleep during this time and spent A LOT of time travelling to and from the coast but it was definitely worth it and I met some of the greatest people ever. When I started I obviously didn’t have much experience so I took a lot of commercial house gigs so that I could learn how to read a room, use CDJs, build a crowd for open sets and keep a crowd for closing sets.
You have a gig coming up tonight- what would your day Routine and approach for the night look like?
During the day I will be getting together a playlist of songs I am really vibing at that current time, I will always look at who I am supporting, if I am supporting anyone and make sure that what I play isn’t going to be too light or heavy for my set time. I will usually look through my promo lists to see if there’s any music that would suit the event too. I check my 3 (minimum) USBs probably a million times before I leave. Always do some promo on the day of the event and hit up some friends in the area to see if they want to join. For pres I will no doubt be playing music that matches the vibe of the event I am playing at to get us all in the mood. I have a list of things I need to have and do before we go so I am happy to share that if anyone is interested
