Tribute to my great friend Charles:

End Of The Show - Rob Oxley

It's easy to say you're slipping away, with certainty

It's harder to know it's the end of the show, anyway

Just gather some dust, find someone to trust

Still life goes by in the blink of an eye.


These thoughts were in my mind after Charles was placed under DNR conditions after being admitted to hospital with severe liver damage. We talked on the phone nearly every day before he was admitted, but the call he made to me, whilst waiting for a hospital bed, was the last time I knew him to be able to speak coherently. He was diagnosed with Covid and the decision was made to "let him go." He hung on for 5 days.

End Of The Show

   I hope my tunes give someone somewhere enjoyment and if not well they are all free and most of them are short.
   I first picked up my elder brothers guitar at 9 and he taught me G7 and C the first and last time anyone taught me to play.
   The house was littered with instruments, it was The Bob Dylan era at least for my much older brother and it might explain the presence of multiple mouth organs Jews harps mandolins penny whistles and guitars but I can't remember how it came about we ended up with two pianos. I don't want to sound ostentatious We were not by any means rich so record collections and sound systems would only surface if one of my brothers would dedicate a pay packet or mum took out some hp.
   The only instrument I would enjoy apart from guitar was piano but without tuition I resigned myself to exploring melodies in my mind, quite literally,single handedly.
   During lockdown Edwina Hayes, on one of her Facebook concerts, mention Talent is Timeless, a new song sharing internet group who were holding a song writing competition for people like me. I bought some recording equipment, wrote and recorded my first ever song and of course it got nowhere.
   What Timeless and Edwina did for me was give me a reason to create an outlet for whatever music and poetry I might find lying about in my head.
   Just as my sports teacher reminded us the chance of becoming a professional footballer is a dream. I aspire to be nothing more than a pub performer but having said that I did play for some decent pub teams in my day lol.
