Just a few hours north the border, Bostonians can land in a cultural center that is far more European in sensibility than its American counterparts. Something deeply French pervades in Quebec’s cultural capital.  Montreal is beautiful at any time of year, but the summer is when it’s at its finest. After a long, cold winter the city emerges in its full glory.  From June through September you can find open air festivals each week, some of the best food in the Americas, and an ongoing celebration of what it means to be alive. And, of course, some dopeass music...

Aswad also plays some new releases which is currently in heavy rotation, and a tribute mix for our guests to wrap up the show in Studio Funk tradition.

2016 just saw another Legend pass away. Kashif Saleem, previously known as Michael Jones, was one of the most prolific producers in the 1980's, producing for acts such as Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, Withney Houston, Howard Johnson and George Benson, just to name a few.

On a personal note, Kashif's music is the ultimate reason why I am the Dj that I aspire to be - the 1st time I heard "I Just Got To Have You (Lover Turn Me On) was one of the greatest musical discovery, if not the greatest, that I encountered - that Moog Bass, those guitar licks, that snare variation on the 8th, the arrangements, the lyrics. I was captivated. Forever. Today, I'm even more convinced that Kashif Changed My Life. Rest In Power Kashif Saleem.

Feelings like this are hard enough to bottle, but Montreal born-and-bred DJ and curator Walla P has managed to somehow do it with every live event and radio show he hosts. Head honcho at the well-regarded funk staple Voyage Funktastique, Walla P is known for his ongoing love affair with 80’s boogie and funk, and shares fans with similarly minded talents such as DâM-Funk, Onra, and Peanut Butter Wolf.

If you’re familiar with the Boogie/Funk scene, you’ve definitely came across the name “Nick Martinelli” in the credits somewhere; whether as a producer (solo or with his acolyte David Todd), as arranger, writer, mixing board or remix duties. He has contributed some of the most notable song within the genre, songs such as Loose Ends “Hangin’ On A String”, Fat Larry’s Band “Act Like You Know”, or 52nd Street “Tell Me How It Feels”, but his catalog’s range is quite exhaustive, diverse and lots of his catalogue is kind of “slept-on”. We’re talking about a superstar producer, who has hits on both the U.S. and U.K. charts, and at the same time has an abundance of underground boogie/disco classic anthems. 

With that in mind, I wanted to pay homage to him, so I decided to do a tribute mix with some of my records that had the name Nick Martinelli on them. (I could easily do 3 more).
