lies a beat up cardboard box
filled with tangled treasures 
more valuable than stocks
whenever asked about it
my old man he would reply

my father bowed his head
he knew he’d been defeated
years of prideful hoarding
in an instant: gone, deleted

one day mom had had enough
this stuff has gotta go
I need the room for decorations
for all my Christmas globes
my tinsel and my ornaments
this vintage snowman stand
a dining table decoupage 
my winter wonderland 

it's the Box Just In Case 
where I keep my cables stored
USB, HDMI, and ancient printer cords
RCA and FireWire 
adapter plugs galore
I’m sure I’ll need them someday, son
just like that pile of 2x4s

Ikea trip this weekend
my job is assembly
cupboards came with extra parts
dowels and screws, M3
gotta keep these extra screws 
they might just fill a need
got a little mason jar
to fill with future needs

it’s the Jar of Just In Case 
where extras go to rest
standard, metric, nails and such
a rusty jumbled mess
no i will not throw them out
they’ll save me cash and time
a trip up to the hardware store
a nickel and a dime
