Underground Hip Hop MIX

Originally written in early 2008

This mix was inspired by a R*#ts concert that I saw in February 07. While watching the concert, I remember thinking to myself that Hip Hop isn't dead, it's just growing up. Hip Hop as a culture and art form must progress and develop in order to survive and stand the test of time. The original Hip Hop generation is getting older and getting more educated. We are not too far away from the first Hip Hop president (maybe even just a few months away). The R*#ts represent the direction that Hip Hop music should be headed. I'm not saying that all acts need to be live bands. But those MC's and producers that fuse the core elements with innovation will keep the art form alive and relevant.

One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. It's been a while since I posted up on Soundcloud.

Here's a mix I did a few years ago but really never got the official push until now. If people have been following me on my social media, people would know that I recently have a passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Now am I good at it? Hell no...but it definitely helped change my life. I lost a lot of weight & have been the healthiest I have ever been. Also the philosophy of Jiu Jitsu has even helped me with the discipline & learning aspect towards everything I do in life: Djing, creativity, teaching, etc.

Anyways, a good friend of mine, Bear Quitugua, a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and the owner of well respected Jiu Jitsu Kimono Gi company called Shoyoroll, asked me to do a mixtape for him. Bear is a big Reggae music head so I did my best to cater to his taste. He's a traditional Reggae fan so I make sure to put in classic Roots, Lover's Rock, & Riddims into the mix (of course I put Bob Marley in there too...lol). And instead of spinning chunes like a Reggae selector, I actually put my spin into the mix, Beat Junkie Style! Anyways, hope you guys enjoy some of the classic massive chunes....Seen! Respect!!
