Pandit Tarun Krishna Das has been trained by the Dhrupad Maestro late Pandit Vidur Mallick of the Dharbanga Gharana. Gifted with a deep voice, which through dedicated training and practice has reached a clarity heard very rarely, Tarun is today recognized as one of the leading singers of Dhrupad-Dhamar amongst the younger generation from India.
Born and brought up in Vrindavan, Tarun, despite his hardships felt drawn to classical singing in the Dhrupad style. Inspired by his elder brother Sri Radha Govinda Das , Tarun soon became one of the few chosen disciples of Pandit Vidur Mallick, from whom Tarun received intense training in Dhrupad-Dhamar under the Guru-Shishya Parampara. The paternal love and care he received from his Guru sharpened his talent and mind towards this centuries old art of singing, as also initiated him into various other branches of singing.
Tarun's singing of the Dhrupad-Dhamar is based on four phases of Nom-Tom Alap, powerful harmony of melody and rhythm and poetic compositions as emphasized in the tradition of the Darbhanga Gharana. His brilliant performances in prestigious music festivals have received wide critical appreciation across India.
Tarun Krishna Das has been felicitated with the Surmani title by the Sur-Singar Parishad in Mumbai, and has also been an award winning singer of the Yuva Mahotsav organized by the Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi. He has participated in various music festivals across India, a few of them being the Dhrupad Mela Tulsi Ghat in Varanasi, Sangeet Natak Academy festival at Jammu, the U.P. Sangeet Natak Academy festival in Lucknow , Dhrupad Samaroh at Indore and Bhopal, and the Haridas Sammelan in Vrindavan.
besides being a graded radio artist for Dhrupad-Dhamar, Tarun Krishna is one of the few younger generation singers of the Haveli Sangeet, propagated by the Pushtimargi Vallabhacharya Sampradaya during the 16th and 17th century. He has been receiving guidance from Pt. Chandraprakashji of ajmeras well as from the Maestro Pandit Jasraj in this tradition of singing. In addition to his mellifluous tonal quality, he is gifted with intense sensitivity and a feeling of devotion that literally creates the magic of feeling one with the Lord of Vrindavan. Ask Tarun as to what inspires him, quick is he to reply with a modesty and humbleness that is rare to see : ''I am still groping, it is He who makes me sing and express. Tarun has thus mesmerized audiences at the Bharat Sanskritik Sansad in Kolkata , the Basantmahotsav in Bhubaneshwar as well as the Latitarpan festival in New Delhi, to name just a few.
A complete artist, Tarun lives in Vrindavan, where he teaches Dhrupad Dhamar to students from India and abroad. Out of a sense for responsibility towards his Guru and the age old tradition of Dhrupad -Dhamar, he has founded the Pandit Vidur Mallick Memorial Kala Sanstan, with a vision to re-generate interest in this art amongst the younger generation.
