Have you ever stood on a balcony, or by a cliff's edge, looked over the edge and unexpectedly thought, "If I wanted to, I could just jump?" 

The feeling is known as the "call of the void" or "l'appel du vide" in French. It's more common than you might think and isn't always associated with suicidal ideation. In fact, in some cases it may be a defensive mechanism designed to spur you into action to ensure your safety by imagining the worst. Although it's an area of active research. 

I have experienced this more times than I can count, the sudden thought that I could steer my car into oncoming traffic, step off a cliff, remove my regulator while scuba diving. It's an unusual experience and strangely never feels particularly upsetting to me, although I imagine everyone experiences it differently.
